Judith Leyster : a Dutch master and her world by Judith Leyster( Book )

9 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 933 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Judith Leyster (1609-1660), the most famous woman painter of the Dutch golden age, was remarkable for her time. She pursued a profession dominated by men, was the only female member of the painter's guild known to have had a workshop, and is the sole woman artist whose known work attests to an active role in the open market, then a relatively new form of art patronage that was to transform the Dutch art world

Frans Hals : eye to eye with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian by Anna Tummers( Book )

7 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2013 is officially Frans Hals Year, marking exactly 100 years since the Frans Hals Museum opened its doors. The most important exhibition in this jubilee year is 'Frans Hals: Eye to Eye with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian', in which key works by Frans Hals are presented amid paintings by such famed colleagues as Titian, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Jordaens and Rubens. In this eponymous publication, all the works in the exhibition are presented side by side, enabling the reader to compare the masterpieces and see how the artists inspired one another. These unique confrontations of master painters are essential to an understanding of seventeenth-century art. Famous painters, after all, often produced their works in response to one another, with the aim of surpassing the other and creating something unique. Pieter Claesz, master of Haarlem still life by Pieter Claesz.( Book )

9 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The only monograph on this still-life painter. Focuses on the period 1620-1645. Pieter Claesz is one of the most important still-life painters of the Dutch seventeenth century. His work is noted for the realistic portrayal of the various elements of the still-life, almost to the point of being tangible. The sobriety preached at the time (from around 1630 onwards) is expressed in the monochrome pallet of his modest little banquets and breakfasts. His humble ingredients: bread, cheese, wine, a half-eaten herring, offered in pewter, glass, and porcelain tablewares, seldom varied. His still lifes were balanced, detailed, and tranquil. In 1620, Claesz took up residence in Haarlem where he founded a school of still-life painting. This book focuses on the period 1620-1645 in which Claesz developed the still-life to perfection. He was an artist that transformed the daily and the mundane into a momentous scene emanating a radiant beauty, using the simplest of means. Approximately fifty works are shown that well represent this important artist's evolution

Emotions : pain and pleasure in Dutch painting of the Golden Age by Gary Schwartz( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fear, sadness, surprise, anger, lust and love - virtually nothing was more important in the paintings ofthe Golden Age than convincingly depicting human emotions. In this publication, the Frans Hals Museum and Rembrandt expert Gary Schwartz present a selection of masterpieces in which these emotions are sublimely portrayed. According to seventeenth-century connoisseurs, the beauty of a painting was not even half as important as the passions that could be seen in that painting; they formed the soul of the work. Painters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Maerten van Heemskerck and Cornelis van Haarlem were masters at depicting a range of emotions. Their works are presented in a new context - the emotional life - and with a focus on the flourishing scientific study of emotions in our own time. Emotions will be published in conjunction with the first exhibition in the Netherlands to present this essential component of painting. Celebrating in the Golden Age( Book )

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From peasant fairs and carnival celebrations to lavish al fresco parties, processions and civic guard banquets, the Netherlands in the seventeenth century was a golden age of partying. Celebrating the Golden Age provides a pageant of people making merry through the eyes of Dutch masters Esaias van de Velde, Dirck Hals, Willem Buytewech, Jan Miense Molenaar, Frans Hals and Jan Steen, who was perhaps the ultimate painter of these festivities. This volume brings to life the painted party, with scenes of celebration at weddings, elegant garden parties, carnivals, Twelfth Night and May festivities, masquerades and family gatherings on Saint Nicholas' Eve. A series of essays explicates these narrative scenes: their often sly and humorous views of the values of their time, the role of alcohol and bawdy humor, the ways in which painters persuaded their subjects to pose and what costumes and gestures can reveal when the seventeenth century lets its hair down
