"Over 185 German divisions could then be moved west to fight the Allies in North Africa, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Stalin would also join the Axis at that point. The deal fell through. The document from the Russian archives describes statements and offers made by Wolff that directly contradict the pristine image of himself as a marginal figurehead that he so strenuously cultivated after the war."

The author was arrested by the Germans while the Americans were the occupation force in Thüringen in June of 1945. One month later the Americans left and the Russians came. Her imprisonment was to last twelve years. She never saw her two children again. Her troubles had begun because her husband, a major in the 6th Army, captured at Stalingrad in 1942, had cast his lot with the group of German officers who in 1943, supported by the Russians, called for resistance to Hitler in order to save Germany. She refused to repudiate him on the basis of her wedding vows. It was three prisons and three years before she was formally charged with her crime. She had refused to support a request to pardon the death sentence of a man who had once visited her and who was known to be a communist. The man was a traitor in the last months of the war in 1945; to the Germans of the emerging communist East Germany, he was a hero. She was given a death sentence. It was never carried out and later changed to a life sentence. This incomprehensible charge makes as little sense as do most of the charges against her fellow inmates. We follow her struggle to stay alive despite cold, hunger, severe illnesses and hopelessness. Yet for every injustice, she also recounts astounding human kindness from the other women prisoners and some of those who were their taskmasters. When she is in isolation cells, she learns Faust and Bible texts by heart. Her husband, in the meantime, had returned to Germany with the Russians in 1945, no longer a ferverent Nazi, now a ferverent communist in the new DDR/East Germany. He was given a high position in the oversight of the police troops who soon became the East German military. He declared the author dead and married again, this time to a working-class communist. He took the children to his new wife. He broke off all contact to his family, factory owners who had lost their property for the good of the workers. The author was released with a train ticket and 50 Marks from one day to the next in 1956. Any genealogist corresponding with the former East Germany today needs this background
