Vietnam since the fall of Saigon by William J Duiker( Book )

When North Vietnamese troops occupied Saigon at the end of April 1975, their leaders in Hanoi faced the future with pride and confidence. Almost fifteen years later, the euphoria has given way to sober realism. Since the end of the war, the Communist regime has faced an almost uninterrupted series of difficulties including sluggish economic growth at home and a costly occupation of neighboring Cambodia. For the Vietnamese, the basic documents came from Lenin and Mao Tse-tung. The first task of the new rulers in South Vietnam was to fill the vacuum left by the virtual disintegration of the previous regime. Beyond the immediate problem of restoring law and order in the South, the primary problem for the new regime would be to set the economic sector back on its feet. The new regime also moved expeditiously to eliminate or at least reduce the "poisonous weeds" of Western bourgeois culture and plant the seeds of a new and beautiful socialist culture. The regime was taking the first tentative steps toward building socialism in the South while for the time being tolerating a significant degree of private enterprise in most sectors of the economy. - Publisher

9 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 600 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the course of his analysis, the author addresses a number of still-controversial questions about the Vietnam War: Why and with what justification did the United States reject Ho Chi Minh's overtures at the close of World War II? What factors induced the Truman administration to provide economic and military aid to the French in 1950? Should Eisenhower be given credit for keeping the United States out of the conflict in the late-1950's? What role did Hanoi play in promoting the insurgent movement in South Vietnam in the late 1950's? Should the war in South Vietnam be viewed as a civil war or an invasion? How should Kennedy be judged for the policies his administration adopted in Vietnam? Did Johnson attempt to follow Kennedy's lead in South Vietnam, or did he deliberately depart from his predecessor's policies?

"Vietnam became part of French Indochina in 1887 and did not regain independence until after the Vietnam War. Despite relative peace for two decades, the country has experienced little economic growth because of conservative leadership policies. In an effort to end this stagnation, Vietnamese authorities have committed to economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms to modernize the economy and produce more competitive, export-driven industries." "This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Vietnam focuses on the recent changes and leadership of Vietnam and addresses the earlier kingdoms, the period of French Indochina, the wars for liberation, the Vietnam War, and much more. Hundreds of cross-referenced entries are included on political, economic, social, and cultural aspects, as well as the major cities and geographic features. This book also contains a chronology, an introduction that traces Vietnam's history, and a bibliography."--Jacket

Offering an expanded and thoroughly revised edition of his successful text, William Duiker traces the course of Vietnamese history from its origins to the end of the Vietnam War. He considers the country's political structure, foreign relations, economic situation, social problems, and cultural heritage, analyzing the diverse aspects of Vietnamese society and revealing how they have been affected by a generation of conflict and socialist transformation. The author concludes with a discussion of the dynamic factors underlying the Vietnamese revolution, looking at how the changes have affected both the region and the course of the global Cold War."--Jacket
