Drawn to enchant : original children's book art in the Betsy Beinecke Shirley collection by Timothy G Young( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Drawn to Enchant celebrates original artwork for children's books from the collection of Betsy Beinecke Shirley. Guiding the reader on a lively tour through the stages of childhood reading, the delightfully varied images demonstrate how children's books evolved from the nation's first days of independence to our own times. Artists whose works are represented include many beloved favorites, among them Ludwig Bemelmans, Maurice Sendak, A.B. Frost, Wanda Gag, Peter Newell, N.C. Wyeth, Tony Sarg, Robert Lawson, and Johnny Gruelle." "From variant illustrations for Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are to little-known sketches for nineteenth-century periodicals that delighted generations of children, this volume offers a unique opportunity to study the reading lives of children throughout American history and invites each reader to recollect favorite images from the treasured books of his or her own childhood."--Jacket

Exorcism : a play in one act by Eugene O'Neill( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shortly after the debut of Exorcism in 1920, Eugene O'Neill suddenly canceled production and ordered all extant copies of the drama destroyed. For over ninety years, it was believed that the play was irrevocably lost, until it was recently discovered that O'Neill's second wife had in fact retained a copy, which she later gave to the prolific screenwriter and producer Philip Yordan. In early 2011, Yordan's widow discovered the typescript of Exorcism—complete with edits in O'Neill's own hand—in her late husband's vast trove of papers. The discovery and publication of Exorcism, a relatively early play in the O'Neill corpus, furthers our knowledge of O'Neill's dramatic development and reveals a pivotal point in the career of this great American playwright."--Publisher description

The Voynich manuscript by Raymond Clemens( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The fifteenth-century work commonly known as the Voynich Manuscript is often called the world's most mysterious book. Written in an unknown script by an unknown author, the manuscript has no clearer purpose now than when it was rediscovered in 1912 by rare books dealer Wilfrid Voynich. The manuscript appears and disappears throughout history, from the library of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to a secret sale of books in 1903 by the Society of Jesus in Rome. The book's language has eluded decipherment, and its elaborate illustrations remain as baffling as they are beautiful. For the first time, this facsimile, complete with reproductions of elaborate folding sections, allows readers to explore this enigma in all its stunning detail, from its one-of-a-kind 'Voynichese' text to its illustrations of otherworldly plants, unfamiliar constellations, and naked women swimming though fantastical tubes and green baths. The essays that accompany the manuscript explain what we have learned about this work--from alchemical, cryptographic, forensic, and historical perspectives--but they provide few definitive answers. Instead, as New York Times best-selling author Deborah Harkness says in her introduction, the book's essays 'invite the reader to join us at the heart of the mystery.'"--
Painting a map of sixteenth-century Mexico City : land, writing, and native rule( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1975 the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University acquired an exceptional mid-sixteenth-century map of Mexico City, which, until 1521, had been the capital of the Aztecs, the Nahua-speaking peoples who dominated the Valley of Mexico. This extraordinary six-by-three-foot document, showing landholdings and indigenous rulers, has yielded a wealth of information about the artistic, linguistic, and material culture of the Nahua after the Spanish invasion. Painting a Map of Sixteenth-Century Mexico City, edited and with contributions by Mary E. Miller and Barbara E. Mundy, is the first publication of both the complete map and the multidisciplinary research that it spurred. A distinguished team of specialists in history, art history, linguistics, and conservation science has worked together for nearly a decade. The result of all their work, this book focuses not only on the map, but also explores the situation of the indigenous people of Mexico City and their interactions with Europeans at the time the map was made. The scientific analysis of the map's pigments and paper carried out by Diana Magaloni Kerpel, Richard Newman, and Michele Derrick in 2007 marks the most thorough examination of a pictorial document from early colonial Mexico to date."--Jacket
