Practical tools for foster parents( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Describes foster home care, the different circumstances which may make it necessary for a child to live with foster parents, and potential problems and their solutions. More than half a million children today live in out-of-home care, and many have special problems. The need for well-trained, loving foster parents has never been greater. With this book, Girls and Boys Town offers these committed people the professional tools they need to not only care for foster children but to actually help them get better. Our approach to foster care focuses on building relationships with children, teaching them skills, and empowering them by teaching self-discipline and self-control. Foster parents will find effective, research-based solutions for these common concerns: Building a warm, trusting relationship with a foster child who still may have a strong attachment to his or her original family. Working with the foster child's parents who may be uncooperative or even hostile. Creating a safe environment for the foster child, you, and your family. Respecting the foster child's ethnic and cultural background while teaching the child skills to help him or her succeed in the larger world. Learning how to handle "blow ups" and prevent and correct misbehavior while staying calm. Teaching a foster child how to stay under control, solve problems, and make good decisions even when he or she is angry or frustrated. Handling transitions when a foster child moves to another placement or returns home. New or experienced foster parents as well as grand-parents and other relatives caring for a child forced from home by a crisis will find help and hope in Practical Tools for Foster Parents

The goal of this book is to provide caregivers with interventions, treatment options, and treatment plans for teaching aggressive youth how to replace unhealthy, anti-social, and destructive behaviors with healthy, socially acceptable, and safe behaviors. The first part of the book defines what aggression is and introduces and discusses two different types of aggression and how to identify each one. The second part of the book contains a description and explanation of how to deal with aggressive behavior through the teaching methods developed at Boys Town and incorporated in the Boys Town Teaching Model. The third part of the book includes a discussion of treatment planning and the various treatment strategies that can be utilized to help children and adolescents reduce aggressive behaviors. Sample treatment plans from a variety of settings are presented to help caregivers see how intervention strategies can be developed for aggressive youth and used in different environments. The fourth part of the book examines the importance of creating and maintaining a safe treatment environment for children and caregivers. Finally, an appendix offers a social skills chart that can be used as a reference guide for caregivers as they teach new, prosocial skills to replace old, aggressive behaviors. This chart also shows which skills work best with specific types of aggressive behaviors. (Contains 76 references and an index.) (Gcp)
