Aesthetic theory by
Theodor W Adorno(
Book
)
281 editions published between 1947 and 2017 in 11 languages and held by 3,553 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The culmination of a lifetime of aesthetic investigation, Aesthetic Theory is Adorno's major work, a defense of modernism that is paradoxical in its defense of illusion. In it, Adorno takes up the problem of art in a day when "it goes without saying that nothing concerning art goes without saying." In the course of his discussion, Adorno revisits such concepts as the sublime, the ugly, and the beautiful, demonstrating that concepts such as these are reservoirs of human experience. These experiences ultimately underlie aesthetics, for in Adorno's formulation "art is the sedimented history of human misery."

Philosophy of modern music by
Theodor W Adorno(
Book
)
209 editions published between 1949 and 2016 in 8 languages and held by 2,706 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In 1947 Theodor Adorno, one of the seminal European philosophers of the postwar years, announced his return after exile in the United States to a devastated Europe by writing Philosophy of New Music. Intensely polemical from its first publication, every aspect of this work was met with extreme reactions, from stark dismissal to outrage. Even Schoenberg reviled it." "Despite the controversy, Philosophy of New Music became highly regarded and widely read among musicians, scholars, and social philosophers. Marking a major turning point in his musicological philosophy, Adorno located a critique of musical reproduction as internal to composition itself, rather than as a matter of the reproduction of musical performance. Consisting of two distinct essays, "Schoenberg and Progress" and "Stravinsky and Reaction," this work poses the musical extremes in which Adorno perceived the struggle for the cultural future of Europe, between human emancipation and barbarism, between the compositional techniques and achievements of Schoenberg and Stravinsky." "In this completely new translation - presented along with an extensive introduction by distinguished translator Robert Hullot-Kentor - Philosophy of New Music emerges as a key to the whole of Adorno's illustrious and influential oeuvre."--Jacket

Adorno : the stars down to earth and other essays on the irrational in culture by
Theodor W Adorno(
)
30 editions published between 1994 and 2007 in English and held by 1,515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The essays collected here offer an analysis of the irrational dimensions of modern culture which is both timely and disturbing in the 1990s. Adorno's ideas are relevant to the understanding of phenomena as apparently diverse as astrology and "New Age" cults, the power of neo-fascist propaganda and the re-emergence of anti-Semitism, and the psychological basis of popular culture. The longest essay, "The Stars Down To Earth" offers a content analysis of the astrology column in a 1950s Los Angeles newspaper. Adorno argues that the column promotes psychological dependency and social conformism in much the same way as fascist propaganda. He maintains that the same principles operate in the mainstream products of "the culture industry." The three shorter papers illuminate different aspects of Adorno's argument: the relation of occultism to orthodox modern thought, the pervasiveness of anti-Semitism, and the "psycho-technic" rhetoric of fascist propaganda. Stephen Crook's introduction critically reviews Adorno's argument and offers an assessment of its contemporary relevance. Taken together, these essays offer an astringent antidote to any facile optimism about the democratic and pluralist character of postmodern popular culture. Adorno identifies an irrationalist dynamic which implicates the most enlightened and emancipated elements of contemporary culture. His unsettling arguments demand the attention of anyone interested in popular culture, critical theory, racism, and authoritarian politics

Dialectic of enlightenment : philosophical fragments by
Max Horkheimer(
)
35 editions published between 1972 and 2016 in English and held by 1,285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Dialectic of Enlightenment is undoubtedly the most influential publication of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. Written during the Second World War and circulated privately, it appeared in a printed edition in Amsterdam in 1947. "What we had set out to do," the authors write in the Preface, "was nothing less than to explain why humanity, instead of entering a truly human state, is sinking into a new kind of barbarism." Yet the work goes far beyond a mere critice of contemporary events. Historically remote developments, indeed, the birth of Western history and of subjectivity itself out of the struggle against natural forces, as represented in myths, are connected in a wide arch to the most threatening experiences of the present. The book analyzes such phenomena as the detachment of science from practical life, formalized morality, the manipulative nature of entertainment culture, and a paranoid behavioral structure, expressed in aggressive anti-Semitism, that marks the limits of enlightenment. The authors perceive a common element in these phenomena, the tendency toward self-destruction of the guiding criteria inherent in enlightenment thought from the beginning. Using historical analyses to elucidate the present, they show, against the background of a prehistory of subjectivity, why the National Socialist terror was not an aberration of modern history but was rooted deeply in the fundamental characteristics of Western civilization. Adorno and Horkheimer see the self-destruction of Western reason as grounded in a historical and fateful dialectic between the domination of external nature and society. They trace enlightenment, which split these spheres apart, back to its mythical roots. Enlightenment and myth, therefore, are not irreconcilable opposites, but dialectically mediated qualities of both real and intellectual life. "Myth is already enlightenment, and enlightenment reverts to mythology." This paradox is the fundamental thesis of the book. This new translation, based on the text in the complete edition of the works of Max Horkheimer, contains textual variants, commentary upon them, and an editorial discussion of the position of this work in the development of Critical Theory. -- from back cover

The culture industry : selected essays on mass culture by
Theodor W Adorno(
Book
)
68 editions published between 1990 and 2015 in English and Spanish and held by 1,125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The creation of the Frankfurt School of critical theory in the 1920s saw the birth of some of the most exciting and challenging writings of the twentieth century. It is out of this background that the great critic Theodor Adorno emerged. His finest essays are collected here, offering the reader unparalled insights into Adorno's thoughts on culture. He argued that the culture industry commodified and standardised all art. In turn this suffocated individuality and destroyed critical thinking. At the time, Adorno was accused by his many detractors of everything from overreaction to deranged hysteria. In today's world, where even the least cynical of consumers is aware of the influence of the media, Adorno's work takes on a more immediate significance. The Culture Industry is an unrivalled indictment of the banality of mass culture."--BOOK JACKET

Richard Wagner's works are among the most controversial in the history of European music--because of their powerful aesthetic qualities and, in wider political terms, because of their eventual assimilation into the official culture of the Third Reich. This concise synoptic account by the most brilliant exponent of Frankfurt School Marxism subtly interweaves these artistic and ideological qualities. It provides deft musicological analyses of Wagner's scores and of his compositional techniques, orchestration and staging methods, quoting copiously from the music dramas themselves. At the same time it offers incisive reflections on Wagner's social character and the ideological impulses of his artistic activity [Publisher description]
