Speed listening : exploring an analogue of speed reading by William P Wallace( Book )

4 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To determine whether the impressive rates for speed reading (e.g., 500 words per minute) can be approximated in speed listening, two experiments compared the comprehension level of material heard at a normal speaking rate with that heard at accelerated rates. In the first experiment, the major demonstration experiment, three groups of college students--a control group, a group given three hours of training in listening at normal speed, and a group given an equal amount of training in speed listening--were given comprehension tests of (1) material presented at a normal speaking rate, approximately 180 words per minute; (2) "skimmed" material, having unnecessary words deleted so as to produce a presentation rate of 230 words per minute (rate was determined by dividing the number of words in the original passage by the number of minutes it took to play back the skimmed version); (3) original material speeded up, with pitch correction, to 400 words per minute; (4) material skimmed and accelerated to 500 words per minute; and (5) new material (no presentation). While comprehension following speed listening was below that following a normal presentation, the amount of information acquired per unit of listening time was greater under speed listening conditions. Surprisingly, practice in speed reading had little effect on comprehension, both in this and in the second experiment, which increased practice listening experience time to about 16 hours. The document notes that, beyond its theoretical interest, research in speed listening can be applied to programs for the reading disadvantaged and for situations where communication must be restricted to auditory channels. Add-ventures for girls : building math confidence by Margaret Ann Franklin( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This guide is designed to provide teachers with materials they can use with young women to help them to achieve in mathematics and to encourage them to take as many math courses as possible in high school. During their early school years, students develop skills and attitudes toward learning that form the basis of future academic growth. This guide for elementary school teachers includes strategies, activities and resources that deal with five major topics. Part 1, "Attitudes and Math," includes materials on mathematics confidence, math aspirations and expectations, and attribution patterns. Part 2, "Math Relevance," contains materials related to interest in mathematics, making mathematics more relevant and useful, and positive role models for girls. Part 3, "The Learning Environment," contains materials on teacher-student interaction patterns, cooperative learning, problem solving, and independent thinking, intellectual risk taking, and creative problem solving. Other issues are collected in Part 4. Materials on computers, spatial visualization skills, and test-taking skills are included. Part 5 "Mathematics Promotion," includes materials on parent involvement, school counselors, and administrators and other teachers. Each topic in this guide begins with a discussion of research findings on the practices and/or attitudes that affect girls' math attitudes and performance. Strategies, activities, and resources that can be used to address each topic are described. Within each topic, activities for the primary grades are generally listed before those for the intermediate grades. An annotated resource list at the end of each chapter provides resources that contain strategies, activities, and ideas. (Cw)

The birth of 'nature' : a critical taxonomy of meanings for a troubled time by Jared N Ress( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Talk of various crises has filled the air during the beginning stages of the 21st century, to the point that it seems an appropriate time to reassess the modern outlook and the direction of modern civilization. This essay is an attempt at contributing to the philosophical groundwork that could ultimately produce new ways of thinking about how civilized life should be and how to address our problems. One way in which the abstract realm of philosophy intersects with concrete practical issues is in the discourse through which we convince one another to adopt policies, undertake projects, and other such things. `Nature' is a particularly important term within such discourse, primarily because so many of our crises have to do with our relation to the natural environment. It also relates in less obvious ways to the other end of the spectrum of crises, economic problems, especially insofar as these are involved in dilemmas of priority with environmental problems. Moreover, it represents a crucial concept for broader discussions of the aims and evaluation of civilization. Unfortunately, despite this very crucial role, `nature' happens to be a very complicated term with much deep philosophical content and many different senses. These characteristics, along with the ubiquity of its use render it a deceptively easy to understand term. Confusions between its different meanings and casual treatment of the difficult philosophical issues it can imply often render discourse and, indeed, the thinking behind it, vague and ineffectual. By retracing the etymology of `nature', considering philosophical trends concurrent with some of the changes it has undergone, and analyzing some of the philosophically loaded terms and concepts in lexicographers' definitions, this essay will attempt to create a sort of taxonomy of different meanings of `nature' that will help to avoid such confusions and facilitate clearer and more deeply thoughtful discourse regarding our most dire problems

Do trauma survivors experience shame after fear? : an experimental examination of a basic assumption in the trauma literature by Heidi A. J La Bash( )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The dominant theory of PTSD and, subsequently, current gold standard PTSD treatments are based on a model of dysregulated fear. However, a growing body of research suggests that other emotional responses, like shame, are important contributors to PTSD symptom maintenance. The current study sought to forward the trauma literature by using an experimental paradigm to test if trauma survivors, especially those distressed by an interpersonal (vs. non-interpersonal) trauma, experience shame in response to day-to-day experiences of fear. This experimental study used a pre-post between group design in which participants (N = 178) were randomized to receive either a fear or neutral emotion prime with postmanipulation state shame serving as the outcome measure. As predicted, the fear emotion prime interacted with PTSD symptom level to significantly predict postmanipulation state shame. Among participants who reported an interpersonal index trauma and received the fear emotion prime, those with high PTSD symptom levels reported significantly more postmanipulation shame than those with low symptom levels. Interestingly, among participants who reported a non-interpersonal index and received the fear emotion prime, those with high PTSD symptom levels reported significantly less postmanipulation shame than those with low symptom levels. Exploratory analyses did not implicate emotion regulation skill deficits in this relationship. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the relationship of shame to daily experiences of fear in the maintenance of PTSD symptoms, but further exploration into the dynamics of fear, shame, and PTSD represents a priority for the field of traumatology. This is, in part, because shame may impede the treatment and emotional processing of traumas in current gold standard exposure-based treatments
Reducing racing during online instruction with contingent postfeedback delays by Erick Mark Dubuque( )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Online instruction has become more prevalent in higher education over the last decade. Research investigating the effectiveness of this mode of instruction indicates that it is as good as, or better than, instruction in traditional classroom settings. In addition to the various benefits of online learning, there are also unique challenges that accompany this form of instruction. One of these challenges is racing during self-paced lessons. When racing occurs students are not attending to the instructional material and are instead moving through a lesson in an apparent attempt to escape the instructional context as quickly as possible. The purpose of our study was to assess the impact of contingent postfeedback delays on racing during an online lesson. Results from three separate experiments indicate that postfeedback delays can be an effective way to manage racing during a self-paced online lesson for some students
