Justine ou les Malheurs de la vertu by
Sade(
Book
)
186 editions published between 1791 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 785 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The crimes of love by
Sade(
Book
)
140 editions published between 1881 and 2019 in 12 languages and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The five stories in this collection are taken from Les Crimes de l'Amour, originally published in 1800. Sade is best known for his sensational books Justine and Les Cent Vingt Journees de Sodome (The Hundred and Twenty Days of Sodom), yet in his lifetime these and other major works appeared in anonymous or clandestine editions or remained unpublished. It was while he was detained in prison and incarcerated in the asylum at Charenton that he decided to follow up his p̀hilosophical' novel Aline et Valcour with writings more accessible to the general public. And he wanted to prove he was not a mere pornographer but a moralist, like Voltaire and other contemporaries." "In The Crimes of Love Sade contends that love can lead to crime and thence to punishment. Unlike the villains of his major novels, the men and women described in these pages all come to a sticky end. Sade was fascinated by incest but claimed that he did ǹot want to make vice liked'. The stories also illustrate his love of history and his frustrated passion for drama, while R̀odrigo or The Enchanted Tower' is an intriguing example of this complex writer's flight into fantasy - his only means of escape from detention."--BOOK JACKET

When he marries a pious woman and fathers a daughter upon her, Franval is determined to educate his progeny to be 'free'. The ultimate proof of his daughter's liberty? That she become his secret lover. But when the beautiful and accomplished Eugenie spurns an eligible young bachelor, instead declaring her intention to remain with her father, her naive and doting mother's suspicions are at last aroused. Confused and distressed by Eugenie's behaviour, Madame de Franval confronts her husband - with tragic results."--BOOK JACKET

Justine, or : the misfortunes of virtue by
Sade(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1931 and 2009 in English and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The novel tells the story of the beautiful and devout Justine, whose steadfast faith and naive trust destine her from the outset for sexual exploitation and martyrdom. The unending catalog of disasters that befall her, during which she is subject to any number of perverse practices, illustrate the author's belief in the primacy of nature over civilization. Virtue is no match for vice, and as criminality and violence triumph, Justine is doomed to suffer
