The rise of the new woman : the women's movement in America, 1875-1930 by Jean V Matthews( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 1,120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book Jean Matthews chronicles the changing fortunes and transformations of the organized suffrage movement, from its period of declining numbers and campaign failures to its final victory in the Nineteenth Amendment that brought women the vote. She recaptures the personalities and ideas that characterized the movement in these years, drawing portraits and analyzing the intellectual currents--in politics, the economy, sexuality, and social thought--that competed for women's commitment. And she shows how new leadership and new strategies at last brought success in the long struggle that had seen many feminist leaders grow old. The rise of the new woman emphasizes the historical contexts, including progressivism, in which the women's movement operated; the disputes and tensions within the movement itself; and the perennial question of who was to be included and excluded in the quest for women's rights. It also considers the aftereffects of the 1920 constitutional victory, when women found themselves wondering what to do next
Toward a new society : American thought and culture, 1800-1830 by Jean V Matthews( Book )

13 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in 3 languages and held by 859 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author chronicles the breakdown of Enlightenment values as the elitist and rationalist legacy of Jeffersonianism gave way to the populist and capitalist fervor of the Jacksonian era. Documenting the bewildering political and cultural changes between 1800 and 1830, Matthews demonstrates how the questions raised in all areas of cultural and intellectual life were fundamentally about the nature of the Republic itself
Women's struggle for equality : the first phase, 1828-1876 by Jean V Matthews( Book )

10 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ms. Matthews's new study of the early years of the women's rights movement outlines the period from 1828 to 1876 as a distinct "first phase." She situates this early feminist activity within the lively debate over the Woman Question and pays attention to the opponents of equal rights for women as well as its advocates. Her book demonstrates that the intense conflict generated by the movement was due less to its specific reform proposals than to the realization - among men and women - that these early feminists wanted a complete rethinking of what womanhood meant and of the relations between the sexes. In many ways, as Ms. Matthews shows, the early-nineteenth-century movement - in its origins, individualism, hostility to tight organization, dedication to self-discovery, and concern for health issues - strongly resembled the revived feminism of the 1970s. Like the late-twentieth-century movement, its nineteenth-century precursor fostered an initial yearning for personal "liberation" and opportunity, and was later riven by issues of race and sexuality, and confused over the perennial question of "difference."
