We have all experienced the futility of trying to change a strong conviction, especially if the convinced person has some investment in his belief. We are familiar with the variety of ingenious defenses with which people protect their convictions, managing to keep them unscathed through the most devastating attacks. But man's resourcefulness goes beyond simply protecting a belief. Suppose an individual believes something with his whole heart; suppose further that he has a commitment to this belief, that he has taken irrevocable actions because of it; finally, suppose that he is presented with evidence, unequivocal and undeniable evidence, that his belief is wrong: what will happen? The individual will frequently emerge, not only unshaken, but even more convinced of the truth of his beliefs than ever before. Indeed, he may even show a new fervor about convincing and converting other people to his view. How and why does such a response to contradictory evidence come about? This is the question on which this book focuses. We hope that, by the end of the volume, we will have provided an adequate answer to the question, an answer documented by data

27 editions published between 1950 and 2009 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book compiles findings from the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the University of Michigan. The members of this group conducted a program of research, including two field studies and a number of laboratory experiments, in the area of social communication. This compilation presents the reports of the laboratory studies together with a theoretical orientation of the work that has been done. These studies have centered mainly on two sets of problems, namely, communication stemming from pressures toward uniformity in groups and communication in hierarchical structures. The reports of the experiments in this compilation are along these lines. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Teoria della dissonanza cognitiva by

)
12 editions published between 1973 and 2010 in Italian and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When prophecy fails : a social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destination of the world by
Leon Festinger(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The behaviour of a small group of people who believe that they have been forewarned of the impending end of the world would be dismissed by many social scientists as interesting but hardly researchable. The authors of this book are to be commended, not only for undertaking a difficult task, but for doing it remarkably well...Using the participant observer method, this research team collected an impressive body of data in the brief span of two months. Their research resulted in convincing, if not definitive, confirmation of their hypotheses. At the same time, it constitutes a stimulating example of the adaptation of method to a significant subject, rather than the selection of the research topic because it fits the latest fads in methodology." The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work, one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific (and unfulfilled) prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it, the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed. 1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Deviancy: The Psychology of Being Different discusses the effects of deviancy on behavior. The book describes the effect of deviancy per se, in no reference to any particular deviant characteristic. The authors explain the methods they used in this study, as well as some checks made on the study to insure accuracy. Deviants prefer to associate with others of their kind due to fear of rejection, and they tended not to reveal their deviancy. The authors also discuss how deviants and non-deviants react and treat each other, and the degree of aggression that will be shown to a member of either gro
