"Man Ray, the renowned photographer, was there to document it all. His world was filled with artists, writers, and poets, and his camera was his key, allowing him access to cafes, salons, artists' studios, and writers' homes. Within a year of his arrival, he was invited to be Gertrude Stein's official portraitist and to record the image of Marcel Proust on his deathbed. He photographed Pablo Picasso and Peggy Guggenheim, made films alongside the Dadaists, and played chess with Marcel Duchamp. Illustrated with Man Ray's own photographs, this book chronicles a legendary time and place."--Jacket

The films are drawn from the collection assembled by Raymond Rohauer, one of the nation's foremost proponents of experimental cinema, founder of the Hollywood Film Society, and longtime programmer at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. Rohauer helped preserve and promote avant-garde cinema, and these films from his personal archive are some of the most influential and eclectic short films made during the 20th Century

Man Ray : photographs from the J. Paul Getty Museum by J. Paul Getty Museum( Book )

9 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 597 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During a career that spanned more than fifty years, two continents, and work in many media, Man Ray (1890-1976) produced a large body of photographic images that continue to command our attention. This volume presents his early work in New York in the 1910s, selections from his sizeable Paris œuvre in the 20s, 30s, and 50s, and photographs taken during his time in Hollywood in the 40s. Though in later years he expressed a desire to be remembered as a painter, Man Ray continued to work with photography throughout his life, pushing the boundaries of the medium with cameraless images, solarized portraits, and other innovations. The Getty Museum's collection of three hundred works by Man Ray includes vintage prints from the 1910s through the 1960s. This volume presents more than fifty photographs, with commentary on each image by Katherine Ware, assistant curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The volume also includes an overview of his life and the edited transcript of a symposium on his career

Thereafter, she embraced life as the irrepressible Kiki, lover of Man Ray, beloved friend of Soutine and Jean Cocteau - the toast of Montparnasse. One of the

The Safety of Objects is a breakthrough collection of stories that carries readers into a world of emotional sf where everyone, regardless of age, plays hide-&-seek & no one is really safe. Not the boy abducted by a hard-to-please kidnapper; not the child kept "alive" by a battery of machines; not the parents spiraling into sloth & substance abuse after packing off the kids to grandmother's house; not the teenager vigorously seduced by his sister's doll, in one of the most vivid episodes of amour found in recent fiction. In the stories of A.M. Homes, the real & the surreal meet on even terms to create a disturbing & sometimes hilarious vision of the way we live now, where the most bizarre circumstances are surprisingly familiar

Man Ray : human equations : a journey from mathematics to Shakespeare by Man Ray( Book )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How does one make sense of a purported link between mathematics, William Shakespeare, and art? The answer lies within the oeuvre of Man Ray (1890-1976). The publication sets out to unravel the Surrealist puzzle beginning with his photographs of mathematical models he encountered at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris in the thirties. Moreover, it charts a path culminating in his Shakespearean Equations (1947-1954) series of oil paintings, which were inspired by the photographs and painted in Hollywood over a decade later. The arc the images strike from painting back to photography reveals the ease with which Man Ray moved between various disciplines and forged his own path. An inveterate experimenter, he pioneered artistic activities in the realms of painting, object making, film, and photography, challenging conventional boundaries and blurring established aesthetic categories
