In der Strafkolonie : eine Geschichte aus d. Jahre 1914 by Franz Kafka( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

Ill seen ill said by Samuel Beckett( Book )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This late work from Samuel Beckett is the haunting picture of an old woman alone in a cabin, who watches the evening and the morning star and ventures out chiefly to visit a grave. In prose of great poetic beauty, which the author translated from his original French text Mal vu mal dit in 1982, Beckett returns to the imagery of the Old and New Testaments to speculate on the great questions of human existence."--Goodreads
