La belle noiseuse by
Jacques Rivette(

)
57 editions published between 1990 and 2018 in 4 languages and held by 529 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A painter suffering artistic burnout is inspired by his meeting with Marianne at his Languedoc villa. She is persuaded to pose for him as he attempts to recover the 'masterpiece' he had abandoned ten years earlier. The film becomes a playing out of the process of creation (of a painting/a film), a battle of wills between the artist and his model, the artist's wife (who has been his model) and Marianne's lover. This package contains two versions of the film both prepared by Rivette - the four-hour version more in the nature of a performance piece, which explains the process in exhaustive detail (including the hand of an actual artist, Bernhard Dufour, at work) while the two-hour version (minus Dufour's hand) is brisker, more in the nature of a short story, which provides a different perspective on the relationships
