"Written in political exile during the Second World War and first published in two volumes in 1945, Karl Popper's The Open Society and Its Enemies is one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. Hailed by Bertrand Russell as a 'vigorous and profound defence of democracy', its now legendary attack on the philosophies of Plato, Hegel and Marx exposed the dangers inherent in centrally planned political systems and through underground editions became an inspiration to lovers of freedom living under communism in Eastern Europe."--BOOK JACKET

Short and beautifully written, it has inspired generations of readers, intellectuals and policy makers. One of the most important books on the social sciences since the Second World War, it is a searing insight into the id
Objective knowledge; an evolutionary approach by Karl R Popper( Book )

203 editions published between 1972 and 2012 in 10 languages and held by 2,490 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essays in this volume represent an approach to human knowledge that has had a profound influence on many recent thinkers. Popper breaks with a traditional commonsense theory of knowledge that can be traced back to Aristotle. A realist and fallibilist, he argues closely and in simple language that scientific knowledge, once stated in human language, is no longer part of ourselves but a separate entity that grows through critical selection

In search of a better world : lectures and essays from thirty years by Karl R Popper( Book )

123 editions published between 1984 and 2014 in 10 languages and held by 1,178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the course of a life of ninety years Sir Karl can look back on positive changes in the world - the vast reductions in mass poverty, the liberalization of penal systems, the defeat of dictatorships. The search for a better world is never complete, but in spite of two world wars and a long and dangerous cold war, it was not in vain." "The essays and lectures collected in this book chart many familiar as well as some less known aspects of Sir Karl's thinking - from his interest in the birth of scientific speculation in classical Greece to the destructive effects on the intellect of totalitarianism in twentieth-century states. His discussions range over problems of politics, the history of philosophy and great figures of the Enlightenment such as Voltaire and Kant, and the relation of science and art (in an address given at the 1979 Salzburg festival). The book offers important new insights into the thought of one of the greatest of living philosophers, and into the role of science in our civilization."--Jacket

The two fundamental problems of the theory of knowledge by Karl R Popper( Book )

76 editions published between 1979 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 763 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reporting in great detail on important research Popper carried out between 1930 and 1933, "Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie" was not published in German until 1979. The two fundamental problems of knowledge that lie at the centre of the book are the problem of induction, that although we are able to observe only a limited number of particular events, science nevertheless advances unrestricted universal statements; and the problem of demarcation, which asks for a separating line between empirical science and non-science. Popper seeks to solve these two basic problems with his celebrate theory of falsifiability. He argues that science is separated from non-science not by the verifiability but by the falsifiability of its theories. He argues also that the inferences made in science are not inductive but deductive; science does not start out from observations and proceed to generalise them, as many presume, but start with problems, which it attacks with bold conjectures. "The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge" contains the seed of many of the celebrated arguments that were later to find definitive expression in Popper's most celebrated work, "The Logic of Scientific Discovery". --from publisher description

Knowledge and the body-mind problem : in defence of interaction by Karl R Popper( Book )

40 editions published between 1992 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 620 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Sir Karl Popper here examines the problems connected with human freedom, creativity, rationality and the relationship between human beings and their actions. In this illuminating series of papers, Popper suggests a theory of mind-body interaction that relates to evolutionary emergence, human language and what he calls "the three worlds." Rene; Descartes first posited the existence of two worlds--the world of physical bodies and the world of mental states. Popper argues for the existence of "world 3" which comprises the products of our human minds. He examines the interaction between mental states--hopes, needs, plans, ideologies or hypotheses--and the physical states of our brain. Popper forcefully argues against the materialism forwarded by many philosophers which denies the existence of mental states. Instead, he demonstrates that the problem of the interaction between mental and physical states remains unresolved. Knowledge and the Body-Mind Problem is based on Popper's never-before published lectures at Emory University in 1969. Popper has extensively revised the lectures but has retained their accessible format. He has also incorporated some of the discussions which followed the lectures, providing an engaging exchange between the philosopher and his audience
