649 editions published between 1880 and 2018 in 13 languages and held by 2,678 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this essay from Schopenhauer final work, Parerga und Paralipomena (1851), the philosopher favors individual strength of will and independent, reasoned deliberation over the tendency to act on irrational impulses. He examines the ways in which life can be arranged to derive the highest degree of pleasure and success
On the basis of morality by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

157 editions published between 1840 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 1,654 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Persuasive and humane, this classic of philosophy represents one of the nineteenth century's most significant treatises on ethics. The Basis of Morality offers Schopenhauer's fullest examination of traditional ethical themes, and it articulates a descriptive form of ethics that contradicts the rationally based prescriptive theories. Starting with his polemic against Kant's ethics of duty, Schopenhauer anticipates the latter-day critics of moral philosophy. Arguing that compassion forms the basis of morality, he outlines a perspective on ethics in which passion and desire correspond to different moral characters, behaviors, and worldviews. In conclusion, Schopenhauer defines his metaphysics of morals, employing Kant's transcendental idealism to illustrate both the interconnectiveness of being and the affinity of his ethics to Eastern thought
The two fundamental problems of ethics by Arthur Schopenhauer( )

27 editions published between 2009 and 2014 in English and German and held by 1,567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Arthur Schopenhauer's The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics (1841) consists of two groundbreaking essays: 'On the Freedom of the Will' and 'On the Basis of Morals'. The essays make original contributions to ethics and display Schopenhauer's erudition, prose-style and flair for philosophical controversy, as well as philosophical views that contrast sharply with the positions of both Kant and Nietzsche. Written accessibly, they do not presuppose the intricate metaphysics which Schopenhauer constructs elsewhere. This is the first English translation of these works to re-unite both essays in one volume. It offers a new translation by Christopher Janaway, together with an introduction, editorial notes on Schopenhauer's vocabulary and the different editions of his essays, a chronology of his life, a bibliography, and a glossary of names."--Jacket

Essays of Schopenhauer by Arthur Schopenhauer( )

22 editions published between 1880 and 2013 in English and held by 1,106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"These essays are a valuable criticism of life by a man who had a wide experience of life, a man of the world, who possessed an almost inspired faculty of observation. Schopenhauer, of all men, unmistakably observed life at first hand. There is no academic echo in his utterances; he is not one of a school; his voice has no formal intonation; it is deep, full-chested, and rings out its words with all the poignancy of individual emphasis, without bluster, but with unfailing conviction. He was for his time, and for his country, an adept at literary form; but he used it only as a means."

The art of literature by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

60 editions published between 1891 and 2018 in English and held by 992 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The great pessimist who believed in the best and expected the worst from writers here applies his caustic wit to literature and the literary scene. Schopenhauer's piercing analyses of style, critics, literary values, learning, and genius make this volume a handbook on writing? illuminated by the author's own shining, powerful style. The best way to discover the finest qualities of style and to form a theory of writing, he advises, is not to follow a trendy mannerism, but to study the ways in which great authors executed their best work. Schopenhauer provides excellent examples for aspiring writers in this collection of essays from his celebrated work Parerga. Translated by T. Bailey Saunders
Philosophical writings by Arthur Schopenhauer( )

4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 881 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) is to this day the most widely read philosopher in Germany. As the composer Richard Wagner also noted, with Schopenhauer one may finally give voice to the secretly held belief that the world is essentially bad. This blunt honesty is Schopenhauer's trademark. Perhaps no philosopher matches him in relating metaphysical speculation to the seemingly random events of everyday life. This volume includes Schopenhauer's most well-known and trenchant writings
On the fourfold root of the principle of sufficient reason by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

47 editions published between 1889 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 800 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A disciple of Immanuel Kant, Arthur Schopenhauer took the Kantian concept that all knowledge derives from experience and broadened it to conclude that our experience of the world is necessarily subjective and influenced by our own intellect and biases, and that reality is but an extension of our own will. This is the basis of all of Schopenhauer's thinking, and here, he offers and essential foundation for understanding and appreciating all of his work. First produced as his doctoral dissertaion in 1813, these two essays -- "On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason" and "On the Will in Nature" -- were revised and published by the author in 1847; this 1889 edition represents its first translation into the English language. Students of philosophy and of 19th-century culture will find this a demanding but satisfying read -- Publisher's description

Parerga and Paralipomena : short philosophical essays by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

46 editions published between 1974 and 2016 in English and held by 769 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the publication of the Parerga and Paralipomena in 1851, there finally came some measure of the fame that Schopenhauer thought was his due. Described by Schopenhauer himself as 'incomparably more popular than everything up till now', the Parerga is a miscellany of essays addressing themes that complement his work The World as Will and Representation, along with more divergent, speculative pieces. It includes his 'Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life', reflections on fate and clairvoyance, trenchant views on the philosophers and universities of his day, and an enlightening survey of the history of philosophy."--Slipcover

On human nature; essays, partly posthumous, in ethics and politics by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

Essay on the freedom of the will by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

14 editions published between 1960 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The winning entry in a competition held by the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences, Schopenhauer's 1839 essay brought its author international recognition. Its brilliant and elegant treatments of free will and determinism elevated it to a classic of Western philosophy, and its penetrating reflections still remain relevant. Schopenhauer makes a distinction between freedom of acting (which he endorses) and the freedom of willing (which he refutes). The philosopher regards human activity as entirely determined, but he also posits that the variety of freedom that cannot be established in the sphere of human activity resides at the level of individuated will-a reality that transcends all dependency on outside factors. Because the essay's clear and rigorous argument reveals many basic features of his thought, it forms a useful introduction to Schopenhauer for students of philosophy or religion
On vision and colors by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

27 editions published between 1993 and 2010 in English and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the first two decades of the nineteenth century, two of the most significant theoretical works on color since Leonardo da Vinci's Trattato della Pittura were written and published in Germany: Arthur Schopenhauer's On Vision and Colors and Philipp Otto Runge's Color Sphere. For Schopenhauer, vision is wholly subjective in nature and characterized by processes that cross over into the territory of philosophy. Runge's Color Sphere and essay "The Duality of Color" contained one of the first attempts to depict a comprehensive and harmonious color system in three dimensions. Runge intended his color sphere to be understood not as a product of art, but rather as a "mathematical figure of various philosophical reflections." By bringing these two visionary color theories together within a broad theoretical context--philosophy, art, architecture, and design--this volume uncovers their enduring influence on our own perception of color and the visual world around us
