Rhapsody : a dream novel by Arthur Schnitzler( Book )

280 editions published between 1926 and 2018 in 10 languages and held by 1,763 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Like his Viennese contemporary Sigmund Freud, the doctor and dramatist Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) was a bold pioneer in exploring the dark tangled roots of human sexuality." "Arthur Schnitzler is probably most famous for La Ronde, a play too scandalous to publish or perform in his own lifetime but whose daisy-chain of couplings inspired both Max Ophuls's classic film and David Hare's modernized version, The Blue Room, which played to sell-out audiences in the West End and on Broadway. Dream Story is an equally erotic work, in which a married couple are first traumatized and then achieve a new depth of understanding by confessing to each other their sexual fantasies, dream-like adventures and might-have-beens ..." "Taking us on a guided tour of Vienna's seedy cafes, redlight district, decadent villas, hospitals and morgue, Schnitzler uncovers the violence and depravity lurking beneath the surface of civilized society." "Dream Story is the inspiration for the film Eyes Wide Shut, co-written by Stanley Kubrick and Frederic Raphael."--Jacket

The road into the open by Arthur Schnitzler( Book )

20 editions published between 1913 and 2016 in English and held by 756 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the outset, 'The Road to The Open' is about a talented young composer suffering from a lack of inspiration. It is, however, a brilliant description of a slice of pre-World War I Viennese society, especially its intelligentsia. The novel dexterously showcases 'fin-de-siècle Austria' - the veritable Austria of the salons, cafes and musical concert
Therese : chronik eines frauenlebens by Arthur Schnitzler( Book )

111 editions published between 1928 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 609 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beatrice Heinold, widow of well-known actor Ferdinand, is summering at one of the small lake villages in the Salzkammergut with her son Hugo. This is a genteel crowd of Viennese bourgeoisie, sophisticated, urbane and liberated. However, Beatrice realizes that her young son, Hugo, is either having an affair with, of close to doing so with Baroness Fortunata Schon, of whom Beatrice does not at all approve. She tries to confront the Baroness pleading for her son to be left in his innocence and is given the promise, but realizes immediately that the promise will not be kept. Things complexify, however, when Beatrice inexplicably starts a passionate love affair with Hugo{u2019}s best friend, and after learning from him that her late husband, whom she had idolized as the perfect lover and husband, had many affairs during their married life. This weighs deeply on her, and she even contemplates further affairs with others in the community in some sort of revenge on her dead husband. --Bob Corbett at
