The formation of souls : imagery of the Republic in Brazil by
José Murilo de Carvalho(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In The Formation of Souls: Imagery of the Republic in Brazil, Jose Murilo de Carvalho examines the birth of the Brazilian Republic in 1889. Given that the majority of the population of Brazil participated very little in the change from an empire to a republic, what allowed the new government to consolidate its power? As a part of the answer to this question, Carvalho analyzes a collection of republican symbols, images, allegories, and myths of the period as attempts by various republican political elites to shape the collective social imagination. As Carvalho explains, the expansion of popular participation in republican ideals would have been nearly impossible through a purely theoretical, ideological discourse, so it had to be achieved by more universal, accessible means, appealing to collective sentiment through stories and images of heroes and founding fathers, images of women, and national flags and anthems. In this concise but heavily illustrated study, Carvalho demonstrates how the foundational symbols created for the new republic reflected important ideological battles over the nature of the new Brazilian regime. He evaluates the acceptance or rejection of these symbols by the public, that is, their efficacy or failure in promoting the legitimization of the new political system and redefining the collective identity of Brazilians. Available for the first time in an English translation, The Formation of Souls: Imagery of the Republic in Brazil will appeal to all students and scholars of history, political science, and Latin American studies who are interested in one of the key moments of Brazilian political history. -- Publisher's website

Joaquim Nabuco, British abolitionists and the end of slavery in Brazil : correspondence 1880-1905 by
Joaquim Nabuco(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A little studied aspect of the struggle to abolish slavery in Brazil in the 1880s is the relationship established and maintained between Joaquim Nabuco, the leading Brazilian abolitionist, and the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in London. The correspondence between Nabuco and Charles Harris Allen, Secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society, and other British abolitionists throughout the decade and beyond reveals a partnership consciously sought by Nabuco in order to internationalise the struggle. These letters provide a unique insight into the evolution of Nabuco's thinking on both slavery and abolition and at the same time a running commentary on the slow and (at least until 1887-8) uncertain progress of the abolitionist cause in Brazil."--Jacket

Two educational institutions are of decisive importance in the life of Minas Gerais: Caraça and the Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto. They did, at a certain time, expressive work in the matter of education, worthy for what was done in the preparation of personnel and the accent of originality given to the life of the area. Hence its relief, justification of attention. More than simple schools, they are units that form a specific regional brand. Its study is essential and can contribute to clarify reality as well as political or economic notes. And it has been done, as can be seen in the works dedicated to fixing the trajectories of schools and courses, revealing something more than the result of classes, or of research centers
