Nadja by André Breton( Book )

406 editions published between 1928 and 2019 in 20 languages and held by 3,002 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nadja, originally published in France in 1928, is the first and perhaps best Surrealist romance ever written, a book which defined that movement's attitude toward everyday life. The principal narrative is an account of the author's relationship with a girl in the city of Paris, the story of an obsessional presence haunting his life. The first-person narrative is supplemented by forty-four photographs which form an integral part of the work -- pictures of various 'surreal' people, places, and objects which the author visits or is haunted by in Nadja's presence and which inspire him to meditate on their reality or lack of it

Anthology of black humor by André Breton( Book )

140 editions published between 1940 and 2018 in 6 languages and held by 1,068 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is Breton's definitive statement on l'humour noir, one of the seminal concepts of surrealism. In his provocative anthology of the writers he most admires, Breton discusses the acerbic aphorisms of Swift, Lichtenberg and Duchamp, the theatrical slapstick of Christian Dietrich Grabbe, the wry missives of Rimbaud, the manic paranoia of Dali, the ferocious iconoclasm of Alfred Jarry and the offhand hilarity of Apollinaire. For each of the authors included, Breton provides an enlightening preface, situating both the writer and the work in the context of black humour - a partly macabre, partly ironic, and often absurd turn of spirit that Breton defined as 'a superior revolt of the mind'"--

What is surrealism? : Selected writings by André Breton( Book )

34 editions published between 1936 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

André Breton (1896-1966) was the founder and major theorist of the surrealist movement, one of the most vital currents of modern poetry and revolutionary thought. This compilation of Breton's writings gives a compact survey of his views and the perspectives of international surrealism as they have developed through more than half a century, and as they serve to guide the groups and individuals who, in dozens of centuries, have taken up the surrealist cause. About half of the selections are published here in English for the first time; others are reprinted from scarce, out-of-print periodicals. The editor, Franklin Rosemont, met Breton in 1966, and later that year organised the first indigenous US surrealist group. He is the author of two books of poems and the Manifesto on the Position & Direction of the Surrealist Movement in the United States (1970). He played a major role in organising the 1976 World Surrealist Exhibition in Chicago, by far the largest exhibition ever prepared by the surrealists. He lives in Chicago where he edits Arsenal/Surrealist Subversion, English-language journal of the international surrealist movement
Communicating vessels by André Breton( Book )

111 editions published between 1932 and 2006 in 7 languages and held by 690 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hundred headless woman = La femme 100 têtes by Max Ernst( Book )

45 editions published between 1929 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 585 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Hundred Headless Woman is Ernst's first collage novel. It features a loosely narrative sequence of uncanny Surrealist collages, made by cutting up and reassembling nineteenth-century illustrations, accompanied by Ernst's equally strange captions. Ernst's French title, La Femme 100 têtes, is a double entendre; when read aloud it can be understood as either "the hundred-headed woman" or "the headless woman." Along with this enigmatic title character, the book marks the introduction of Ernst's favorite alter ego, Loplop, "the Bird Superior." Ernst was deeply engaged with illustrated books during the 1930s; in addition to collage novels, he created many etchings and lithographs to complement the poems and stories of Surrealist writers with whom he was closely associated

Arcanum 17 : with Apertures grafted to the end by André Breton( Book )

66 editions published between 1944 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 565 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Considered radical at the time, today Breton's ideas seem almost prescient, yet breathtaking in their passionate underlying belief in the indestructibility of life and the freedom of the human spirit. Breton considers issues of love and loss, aggression and war, pacifism, feminism and the occult, in a book that is part prose and part poetry, part reality and part dream

Œuvres complètes by André Breton( Book )

9 editions published in 1988 in 3 languages and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
