Salvarsi : gli ebrei d'Italia sfuggiti alla Shoah, 1943-1945 by Liliana Picciotto Fargion( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in Italian and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than 81% of Jews escaped the Shoah in Italy. This volume presents the results of the "Memory of Salvation" project of the Contemporary Jewish Documentation Center (CDEC) to reflect on how they could save themselves despite searches, arrests and deportations by the Fascist and Nazi authorities. Contrary to what has already been described by Liliana Picciotto in The Book of Memory and in other studies, here is the "reverse of the medal". Nobody had previously put the question, systematically and scientifically, of who they were and why they were saved. Here are some themes: what did the Jews in Italy know about the Shoah that was already raging in Nazi Europe? And what did ordinary people know? What was the risk for a normal citizen who gave relief to the Jews? Can this relief be defined as civil resistance? Was there any difference between the rescue of Jews and that of other groups who were equally in need of going underground: anti-fascist, anti-Fascist army soldiers?
Memorie di un ebreo toscano, 1938-1948 by Giorgio Nissim( Book )

4 editions published in 2005 in Italian and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pp. 19-60 contain an introduction by Picciotto, "L'uomo e l'opera". Pp. 61-155 contain Nissim's memoirs and pp. 155-177 contain notes added by Picciotto. Nissim (1908-1976) was born in Pisa. Through his actions as a member of DELASEM (Delegation for the Assistance of Jewish Immigrants), he saved at least 800 foreign and Italian Jews from Nazi persecution. He started his activities at that institution in 1939, organizing help for refugee children. When Italy entered the war in 1940, ordering the internment of foreign Jews, he tried to assure their well-being by providing them with money, food, clothing, and medical care. In September 1943 the Nazis occupied Northern Italy and DELASEM went underground, now taking care not only of foreign refugees but also of Italian Jews. Its help consisted of providing moneyand false documents and arranging hiding places. Instrumental was the cooperation of the Catholic Church and the Italian resistance. Nissim concentrated his activities in the city of Lucca under the utmost dangerous conditions until a large part of the militants of DELASEM were discovered by the Nazis, imprisoned, and deported. He himself survived under a false identity. He saved his mother, his wife Myriam Plotkin (a Jewish refugee from Lithuania), and their young son by hiding them in different convents. The memoir was written in 1961; his family authorized its publication in 2005

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
