On machine intelligence by Donald Michie( Book )

34 editions published between 1974 and 1990 in 3 languages and held by 758 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book consists of a selection of semi-popular essays written from time to time over the past twenty five years. They serve to entertain a certain notion: if we can form a sufficiently complete and precise theory of any given aspect of intelligence, then we can convert it into a computer program
Intelligent systems : the unprecedented opportunity by Jean E Hayes( Book )

18 editions published between 1983 and 1984 in English and Spanish and held by 471 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an edited collection of 13 papers given at annual Press Seminar organized by the Computer Systems operations of Sperry Limited. The 13 papers discuss the logical basis for computer programming and problem solving, the current status and future (next ten years) prospects for knowledge-based or expert-type systems, and the social consequences and ramifications of these activities

Donald Michie on machine intelligence, biology and more by Donald Michie( Book )

7 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This lively and engaging collection, edited and introduced by Ashwin Srinivasan, one of Michie's 'grand-students', includes a great variety of pieces, from Michie's highly accessible musings for the general reader on robots, mice, archbishops, and the tribulations of journeying in the Soviet Union, to more serious accounts and interviews on computing and thinking machines. Together they bring the breadth and vivacity of Michie's thought to a wide audience."--Jacket
Machine intelligence 13 : machine intelligence and inductive learning by Stephen Muggleton( Book )

8 editions published between 1969 and 1994 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The founder of modern computational logic, J A Robinson, opens this volume with a chapter on the firld's great forefathers John van Neumann and Alan Turing. Stephen Muggleton follows with an analysis of Turing's legacy in logic and machine learning, conceiving these not in generality but as specific means of imparting knowledge into computers, a theme first articulated by Turing in the late 1940s.; The present volume records the Machine Intelligence Workshop of 1992, held at Strathclyde University's Ross Priory retreat on Loch Lomond, Scotland. Here the series entered not only its second quarter-century but a new phase. As can be seen in these pages, machine learning emerged to declare itself as a seed-bed of new theory, as a practical tool in engineering disciplines, and as material for new mental models in human sciences
Machine intelligence 14 : applied machine intelligence by Kōichi Furukawa( Book )

16 editions published between 1994 and 2002 in English and Italian and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Machine Intelligence 14 contains material presented at the Anglo-Janpanese workshop of Novemver 1993 held at the Hitachi Research Laboratory. It marks the 70th birthday of Donald Michie, the founder of the series. The contents is divided into the following subjects: complex decision taking, inductive logic programming, applied machine learning, dynamic control, and computational learning theory. Applications include controlling a steel mill, discovery of protein structural constraints, and qualitative control for dynamic systems
Machine intelligence 11 : logic and the acquisition of knowledge by Jean E Hayes( Book )

10 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume in the "Machine Intelligence" series maintains the theme of the representation of machine knowledge in a variety of disciplines. There are theoretical papers including computation and logic, problem-solving and proof and on applications to logic programming and machine learning

Breaking teleprinter ciphers at Bletchley Park : general report on Tunny with emphasis on statistical methods (1945) by Irving John Good( Book )

9 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This detailed technical account of breaking Tunny is an edition of a report written in 1945, with extensive modern commentary Breaking Teleprinter Ciphers at Bletchley Park gives the full text of the General Report on Tunny (GRT) of 1945, making clear how the ideas, notation and the specially designed machines that were used differ from what was generally accepted in 1945, and, where a modern reader might be misled, from what is understood now. The editors of this book clarify the sometimes slightly strange language of the GRT and explain the text within a variety of contexts in several separate historical story lines, some only implicit in the GRT itself. The first story, told by the authors of the GRT, describes how, using specially designed machines, including from 1944 the "Colossus", the British broke the enciphered teleprinter messages sent by the highest command levels of the Germany Army. The cipher machines the Germans used were the Lorenz SZ 40 series, called "Tunny" by the British. The second story shows how the use of then-unfashionable Bayesian methods in statistics proved to be essential to the British success. The third story describes a significant stage in the invention of the modern digital computer. This story is connected with Alan Turing's 1936 paper on the theory of computability, which is nowadays seen as a starting point for the development of the modern digital computer. This book includes: . Over 200 pages of commentary, biographies, glossaries, and essays related to the text of the General Report on Tunny. The complete text of the original GRT, covering the general theory of Tunny breaking and of numerous refinements appropriate to special-case situations. All the examples of original worksheets and printouts, showing the Tunny-breaking process in action, that appear in the GRT The main purpose of this book is to present the actual words of the GRT for use by readers with a serious interest in the history of cryptography, computing, or mathematics
