Oceanography, the present and future by
Peter G Brewer(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1982 and 1983 in English and German and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Oceanography: The Present and Future is the proceedings of a symƯ posium held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, on September 29-0ctober 2, 1980 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institution. The symposium was immediately preceded by the Third International Congress on the History of Oceanography, also held at Woods Hole, and the proceedings of that Congress, Oceanography: The Past, also published by Springer-Verlag, forms a companion volume to this book. The editorial responsibilities were handled by Ms. Kate Eldred, who worked extraordinarily hard on this volume, while the scientific editing was performed by Dr. Peter G. Brewer. The organizing committee of scientists charged with responsibility for the symposium was: Dr. Peter G. Brewer, chemistry; Dr. Arthur E. Maxwell, geology and geophysics; Dr. Robert W. Morse, marine policy; Dr. David A. Ross, marine policy and marine geology; Dr. Peter B. Rhines, physical oceanography; Dr. John A. Teal, marine biology; and Dr. Robert Spindel, ocean engineering. They were faced at the outset with the problem that science proceeds with intense effort and competition within a disciplinary peer group but that, particularly in ocean science, the results of this work often have comƯ pletely unforeseen and important consequences in a totally unrelated area

Hydrographic data from R/V Endeavor cruise #90(
)
3 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The final cruise of the NSF sponsored Warm Core Rings Program studied a Warm Core Ring (WCR) in the Fall of 1982 as it formed from a large northward meander of the Gulf Stream. This ring, known as 82-H or the eighth ring identified in 1982, formed over the New England Seamounts near 39.5°N, 65°W. Surveys using Expendable Bathythermographs, Conductivity-Temperature-DepthOxygen stations and Doppler Current Profiling provide a look at the genesis of a WCR. These measurements reveal that WCR 82-H separated from the Gulf Stream sometime between October 2-5. This ring was a typical WCR with a diameter of about 200 km and speeds in the high velocity core of 175 em/sec. Satellite imagery of 82-H following the cruise showed that it drifted WSW in the Slope Water region at almost 9 km/day, had at least one interaction with the Gulf Stream and was last observed on February 8, 1983 at 39°N, 72°W
