Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen( )

60 editions published between 1890 and 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,703 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The master builder: First performed in 1892, this psychological drama is one of the great Norwegian playwright's most symbolic and lyrical works. The drama explores the insecurities of an aging architect, Halvard Solness, who suspects that his creative powers have diminished with age. Solness finds strength of purpose in his involvement with Hilda - his muse, inspiration, and ardent believer in his greatness - but their association leads to a conflict between heroic myth and complicated reality
Gray by Edmund Gosse( Book )

117 editions published between 1882 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,639 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This 1884 biography of Thomas Gray was the first full-length treatment of its subject. Gosse was an authority on Gray, the editor of his collected works, and his knowledge and affinity for the poet makes this a first-class literary biography

Gossip in a library by Edmund Gosse( Book )

It is curious to reflect that the library, in our customary sense, is quite a modern institution. Three hundred years ago there were no public libraries in Europe. The Ambrosian, at Milan, dates from 1608; the Bodleian, at Oxford, from 1612. To these Angelo Rocca added his in Rome, in 1620. But private collections of books always existed, and these were the haunts of learning, the little glimmering hearths over which knowledge spread her cold fingers, in the darkest ages of the world. To-day, although national and private munificence has increased the number of public libraries so widely that almost every reader is within reach of books, the private library still flourishes. There are men all through the civilised world to whom a book is a jewel - an individual possession of great price. I have been asked to gossip about my books, for I also am a bibliophile. But when I think of the great collections of fine books, of the libraries of the magnificent, I do not know whether I dare admit any stranger to glance at mine

Aspects and impressions by Edmund Gosse( Book )

50 editions published between 1922 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 900 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This title by Edmund Gosse acurately describes the author's mixture of personal and scholarly voice. Gosse describes the life and works of a number of prominent thinkers, and inhis chapter on Rousseau, he makes a lively defense for the philosopher from Geneva. Aspects and Impressions points out that the first of Rousseau's detractors were largely political in nature, and the criticism was mainly focused on aspects of his writings that went against common trends

Critical kit-kats by Edmund Gosse( Book )

" ... For the low comfortable rooms where people dined in the last century, there was invented the shorter and still less intrusive picture called a Kit-Kat [or Kit-Cat] ... which emphasises [i.e. emphasizes] the head ... I have ventured to borrow from the graphic art this title for my little volume, since these are condensed portraits ..."--Preface
The correspondence of André Gide and Edmund Gosse, 1904-1928 by André Gide( Book )

17 editions published between 1959 and 1977 in English and French and held by 746 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shortly after first reading La Porte étroite the English critic Edmund Gosse wrote a letter of warmest praise to its author, Andre Gide, inaugurating an intimate correspondence that was to continue for nearly 20 years. At the time the exchange began, Gosse was a powerful and venerated man of letters in Great Britain who was able to make or destroy a writer's reputation, Gide, who was then just beginning to be known, was eager to obtain wider recognition, especially among English-speaking readers. Friendship between the two men grew rapidly, stimulated by their similar interests and common backgrounds. Eighty-eight of the total of about one hundred letters exchanged are included in this volume
A short history of modern English literature by Edmund Gosse( Book )

99 editions published between 1846 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 736 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Edmund Gosse (1849-1928), author and literary critic, held posts as a lecturer at Trinity College, Cambridge, and librarian to the House of Lords; he was honoured with a knighthood in 1925. His 1897 history of English literature (of which the version reissued here was published a year later by William Heinemann as Volume 3 in the series Short Histories of the Literatures of the World) traces the nation's greatest literature, from Chaucer to Tennyson, across eleven chapters. Rather than concentrating on biographical or sociological detail of English literary history, Gosse's book instead focuses on literary technique and style, intending to instil 'a feeling of the evolution of English Literature in the primary sense of the term'. Gosse had his detractors, who accused him of a cavalier approach to factual detail, but his novel approach to literary criticism means that the work can still be read with interest and enjoyment
