English in a decade of change by Michael F Shugrue( Book )

6 editions published between 1968 and 1969 in English and held by 593 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A status report on the teaching and learning of English reviews and assesses a decade of change and innovation in the discipline. It surveys trends in the preparation of teachers of English, the English curriculum at all levels, and patterns of school and college organization which affect the teaching of English from kindergarten through graduate school. Some topics considered in chapter one, "The English Curriculum," are: (1) federal support of English, (2) the experiences of the Curriculum Study Committee at Nebraska, (3) the Carnegie-Mellon curriculum, (4) the Northwestern curriculum, and (5) the lessons of Dartmouth. Chapter two, "The Teacher of English," discusses the need for dialogue within the profession and encourages teachers, especially at the college level, to think in terms of curriculum outside their own department. Among the topics discussed in this chapter are the English teacher in the two-year college and the English Teacher Preparation Study. Chapter three, "English, Education, and Change," suggests promising techniques and classroom patterns for the 1970's and discusses: (1) how and why change takes place, (2) the experiment at Evanston, Illinois, (3) information retrieval in English, (4) censorship, and (5) testing and ability grouping. Prospects for the 70's; English departments and multidisciplinary study by Harry, Ed Finestone( Book )

4 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 311 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Providing a rationale for the involvement of college English departments in interdisciplinary work, the papers in this collection discuss the difficulties surrounding the introduction of interdisciplinary courses and programs that make special demands on the time and energy of individual faculty members and on limited departmental resources. Established model programs are outlined and administrative strategies for experimenting with interdisciplinary studies are suggested. The papers also argue for a careful review of existing English programs, for discussion of the potential and limitations of interdisciplinary work, and for careful experimentation with nontraditional approaches to the teaching and learning of language and literature. Among the contributing authors are John Gerber, Maynard Mack, Wallace Douglas, John Fisher, and Paul Olson. Appended are several conference and workshop reports. (Hod)

3 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of 15 descriptions of teaching practices was designed to aid classroom teachers and to inform curriculum supervisors, administrators, and the general public of the wide range and complexity of activities within the profession. Two articles emphasize the place of linguistics in the classroom and clarify some of the problems of traditional grammar. The three articles on literature cover Kenneth Burke's dramatistic elements, the theme-concept unit in literature, and a literature program for summer schools. The section on composition deals with the place of linguistics in composition, with revising themes, and with grading by records. Three articles cover teacher education and training, and the final four articles deal with curriculum development: reading in junior high schools, seminars for talented rural youth, research and development in the teaching of English, and ways of developing interdisciplinary seminars. Promising practices in the teaching of English : 1963 : a report on selected new developments in the teaching of English by National Council of Teachers of English( Book )

1 edition published in 1963 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over 150 teachers and administrators contributed practices and ideas to this first report of the National Council of Teachers of English Committee on Promising Practices in the Teaching of English. From these the committee identifies three national trends: (1) a growing sense of responsibility by the federal government to encourage and implement research in the teaching of English, (2) a reexamination of English curricula by large and small school systems, colleges, and universities, and (3) a new willingness of colleges of education, liberal arts colleges, elementary and secondary schools, and professional organizations to share information and collaborate on research projects. The report then briefly describes new ideas and promising practices in these five areas of concern for the teaching of English; (1) curriculum development activities, including federal programs, (2) methods and approaches to teaching, (3) patterns for educating teachers of English, (4) inservice education programs for teachers, and (5) new publications on the teaching of English.
