Annotation This collection of 174 papers from the April 2002 conference presents recent developments in stainless steel, friction stir, gas tungsten arc, and laser beam welding along with new results about the reduction of cracking, the properties of weldments, the modeling of residual stresses, and robotics. Among the topics are HAZ properties of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel, anode heat transfer in GTA welding, the effect of pin tool shape on metal flow during friction stir welding, and fume generation and control in gas metal arc welding. Other topics include consumables for underwater wet welding, components of the creep strength of welds, and the weldability of electro-deposited nickel. Weldability and weld performance of candidate nickel base superalloys for advanced ultrasupercritical fossil power plants part I: fundamentals( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : Fossil fuel will continue to be the major source of energy for the foreseeable future. To meet the demand for clean and affordable energy, an increase in the operating efficiency of fossil fired power plants is necessary. There are several initiatives worldwide to achieve efficiencies >45% higher heating value (HHV) through an increase in steam temperature (700 to 760°C) and pressure (27.6 to 34.5 MPa). Realising this goal requires materials with excellent creep rupture properties and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. In order to accomplish this, three classes of materials have been identified: creep strength enhanced ferritic steels, austenitic stainless steels and nickel base superalloys. Although new alloys have been designed and developed to meet this need, welding can have a significant and often detrimental effect on the required mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. Two previous papers addressed the welding and weldability of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. Welding and weldability of nickel base alloys will be discussed in a two part paper. In this paper, the primary focus will be on the fundamentals of welding and weldability of Ni base superalloys
Effects of Solute Redistribution on the Structure and Properties of Cast Alloys( Book )

1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report summarizes work on composite and alloy solidification presently conducted under the ONR contract and includes two papers on the simulation of heat flow and thermal stresses in continuous casting presented at the 'Conference on Computer Simulation for Materials Applications' in Gaithersburg, Md. in April 1976. A final element analysis of heat transfer in continuous casting is presented in the first paper. The steady state conditions of the solidification of a cylindrical alloy ingot are simulated. The analysis takes into account both radial and axial heat conduction and the variation of alloy properties with temperature. The analysis has the versatility to simulate any casting configuration as the program has the capability to treat any arbitrary boundary conditions. In the mold region, where an air gap generally forms, the position of gap formation, the size of the gap and the heat transfer through the gap by conduction and radiation are computed. Values predicted by the model are in close agreement with published laboratory and industrial data
Structure and Properties of Melt Grown Nb-Nb2C Composites( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The report consists of two preprints. One preprint describes a process for growing eutectic and hypereutectic Nb-Nb2C composites by an electron beam floating zone freezing technique. The structure is characterized as a function of carbon content and growth rate. The conditions for interface stability in the Nb-Nb2C system are compared to present theoretical models. The second preprint discusses sources of banding in composite growth and pays particular attention to banding that results from nonuniformity in the feed rod. This mechanism is important in composite growth techniques employing zone melting and may be avoided by zone levelling prior to composite growth. (Author)
