Integrating the individual and the organization by Chris Argyris( Book )

58 editions published between 1961 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 1,373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The emphasis on organizational change in the corporate life of recent years-including job redesign, autonomous groups, high performance work systems, and the redesign of control systems-owes a great deal to the pioneering work of Chris Argyris. This book examines how individuals in organizations can become more effective, in turn making organizations more effective. It explores the conventional pyramidal structure of organizations, in which there is top-down control by managers over workers, and examines their negative consequences. These include organizational injustice and eventually irrational decision-making. Argyris also discusses the characteristic learning system of the modern organization, which he describes as -single-loop- in character. This system, he argues, is only adequeate enough to permit the organization to implement existing policies. It does not permit the more difficult and comprehensive task of questioning underlying goals and assumptions, which he terms -doubt loop- learning. In this kind of learning, the organization is able to confront the more difficult problems that affect organizations in a time of transition. In his new introduction, Argyris reviews the strengths and limitations of the argument advanced in Integrating the Individual and the Organization. He describes why the pyramidal structure endures, and why creating a self-learning organization is an even more challenging task than he has imagined. The book will be of interest to professionals with a long-standing interest in organizational development as well as those just entering the field, managers confronting the challenge of organization change, and researchers in organizational behavior and theory."--Provided by publisher

Intervention theory and method; a behavioral science view by Chris Argyris( Book )

22 editions published between 1970 and 1973 in English and held by 947 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The primary tasks of intervention activity are introduced in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, the conditions necessary to develop the competence of any social system are explored. In Chapter 3 the probabilities that client systems will tend to manifest these conditions are examined, and in Chapter 4 it is shown that the research methods used by an interventionist may also inhibit his effectiveness. Chapter 5 represents an attempt to give some suggestions for the development of more organic research and diagnostic activities that may increase the interventionists' probabilities for effectiveness. In Chapter 6, the conditions under which interventionists will work are examined, and a primary intervention cycle is developed in Chapter 7. In Chapter 8 the conditions that lead to ineffective intervention activity are examined, and Chapter 9 contains an analysis of three cases where interventionists behaved ineffectively. Chapter 10 focuses on the problems of locating a client system; Chapter 11 follows with a detailed discussion of two introductory meetings with client systems. Chapter 12 discusses how to systematically select a potential client system, and in Chapter 13 some basic requirements for diagnostic methods are presented. The method used by the writer to diagnose systems is outlined in Chapter 14. Chapter 15 discusses the feedback process, and Chapter 16 deals with the problem of terminating ineffective relationships with client systems. (Author/CK)
Management and organizational development; the path from XA to YB by Chris Argyris( Book )

19 editions published in 1971 in English and Undetermined and held by 930 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using the case history method, this book documents the actual experiences of three top management groups seeking to develop the full potential of the technical and human resources of their organizations and to grow profitably in both economic and human terms. Each of the organizations is at some stage of the process of changing from the old-fashioned, essentially bureaucratic way of judging and managing employees--XA--to the modern, creative, humanistic approach based on the latest findings of behavioral scientists--YB. The case histories illustrate how top management groups were helped by a consultant to examine and reevaluate their fundamental assumptions about people as employees, to recognize how individual, interindividual, and group behavior affect organizational effectiveness, and to discover how a humanistic approach toward people produces a self energizing, dynamically creative organization. A bibliography, name index, and subject index are provided. (Author/DB)

Knowledge for action : a guide to overcoming barriers to organizational change by Chris Argyris( Book )

16 editions published in 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 859 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The landmark book Action Science introduced a revolutionary theory of Organizational inquiry that demonstrated ways to solve problems, enhance human development and learning, and promote individual, organizational, and social change. Now, Chris Argyris translates the powerful theoretical approach presented in that work into practical advice for researchers and managers." "Knowledge for Action presents a step-by-step description of how to assess an organization's capacity to learn, analyze the data, and design and implement effective interventions that help create a more dynamic and innovative organization. Argyris demonstrates how his proven research methods produce actionable knowledge - knowledge that tests the validity of the research methods themselves when used in day-to-day operations - and calls for a genuine partnership between professionals and researchers both to implement the research properly and to test its results in everyday life." "Using a detailed case study of a professional service organization, Argyris illustrates how to reduce counterproductive politics and implement change from the top down. Drawing from interviews with and observations of top management, he shows how to identify and correct defensive routines and political problems that occur in organizations. By presenting transcripts of actual discussions, the author reveals how previously "undiscussable" problems can be resolved and how adversarial relationships can be turned into productive partnerships. He includes checklists, charts, and scoring procedures that researchers and line managers can use to make lasting changes to the status quo."--Jacket

The applicability of organizational sociology by Chris Argyris( Book )

24 editions published between 1972 and 1974 in English and Undetermined and held by 812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1972, this is a searching critique of work by both sociologists and psychologists on organisational structure and behaviour. Professor Argyris - although examining many different viewpoints - focuses in depth on five major writers on the subject: John Goldthrope, Peter Blau, James Thompson, Charles Perrow and David Lockwood, and analyses the practical, policy-making implications they draw or which would logically follow from their theoretical position. Asserting that research work on complex organizations has failed to integrate the sociological and psychological level of analysis - ignoring the importance of individual personality, group dynamics and interpersonal relationships - the author argues that this is self-defeating for sociological research; that it questions many of the findings of sociologists; and leads to their work in fact unintentionally maintaining the status quo as conceived by scientific management. A challenging and stimulating contribution to the debate on sociological theory

Reasons and rationalizations : the limits to organizational knowledge by Chris Argyris( Book )

31 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 457 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Argyris is one of the best known management scholars in the world - a leading light whose work has consistently addressed fundamental organizational questions, and who has provided some of the key concepts and building blocks of our understanding of organizational learning: single and double learning, theory in use, and espoused theory, amongst others." "In this book, he questions many of the assumptions of organizational theory and research, an investigation which is not confined to academic analysis. He also scrutinizes that capacity for 'unproductive reasoning' (even as self-deception and rationalization) that is common amongst managers, consultants, and indeed more generally. As well as engaging with the work of leading organizational researchers (Sennett, Gabriel, Burgelman, Czarniawska, and Grint, for example), he also ponders the work of the consultants, commentators, and accountants who endorsed Enron." "Drawing on his own wealth of experience of researching and working with organizations, this book will be a reference point for developing useful knowledge and confronting the defences and deceptions that are only too commonplace in the business and academic worlds."--Jacket
