The Suicide of a camp survivor : the case of Primo Levi( Visual )

4 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 309 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the story of an assimilated Italian Jew, a chemist of no particular renown whose efforts to survive in fascist Italy were finally thwarted when he was deported to Auschwitz, where he survived through no effort of his own while tens of thousands around him were slaughtered-people possibly nobler, more valuable than he. He emerged from the experience a superb writer and a scarred man, who in his works sought to remember, bear witness to, and above all understand the human qualities that emerge on the sharp edge of despair. He survived the camp, burning with the need to tell how it was; and when he had done so and said it all, he gave in to depression and ended his life. (72 minutes)

Can't slow down( Visual )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 306 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This program examines Americans' increasingly hurried lifestyle, working 160 hours a year more than they did in 1970. And for what? Because of the urge to acquire, the pressure to achieve or be fired, the need to achieve outside the home, and longer commutes to work, couples are too busy to talk to one another. The program asks how we are spending our time and how the constant rush is affecting everything about our relationships and our health
Portrait of an onnagata by Films for the Humanities( Visual )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Men playing the stage roles of women is as old as the history of theater; in the tradition of Kabuki, the portrayal of female characters has become a tradition of its own. This program looks at the history of Kabuki and the role of women, and looks particularly at the dynastic development of the onnagata-the female impersonator-and the intricate techniques and details by which a thoroughly masculine male transforms himself into a man's dream of the womanly woman: more feminine and more perfect than any real woman, young lover, geisha, or princess. (30 minutes)
Children of Perestroika( Visual )

3 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Children too have to deal with the consequences of the political upheaval in the former Soviet Union. This sad and charming documentary, which features children from the Siberian city of Kemerovo, shows how perestroika and glasnost have affected the children: the Pioneers, which used to have so much influence on their lives, has been disbanded; much of what they were taught has turned out to be untrue; scarcity and inflation have affected everyone. Even some of the children are nostalgic for the past

For business, the media, and society at large? This program seeks answers to those questions by going behind the scenes at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, as well as the company's London offices. "Torso," set to music by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, is a sexy, steamy look at two lost lovers--a sultry ambivalent woman, and an anguished man.
