Language Transfer in Language Learning : Revised edition by Susan M Gass( )

3 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study of native language influence in Second Language Acquisition has undergone significant changes over the past few decades. This book, which includes 12 chapters by distinguished researchers in the field of second language acquisition, traces the conceptual history of language transfer from its early role within a Contrastive Analysis framework to its current position within Universal Grammar. The introduction presents a continuum of thought starting from the late 70s, a time in which major rethinking in the field regarding the concept of language transfer was beginning to take place, and continuing through the present day in which language transfer is integrated within current concepts and theoretical models. The afterword unites the issues discussed and allows the reader to place these issues in the context of future research. For the present book, the 1983 edition has been thoroughly revised, and some papers have been replaced and added
English for academic and technical purposes : studies in honor of Louis Trimble by Larry Selinker( Book )

12 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers in this "Festschrift" are theoretical and descriptive in nature as well as practical. The first section of the book contains theoretical papers dealing with the following topics: criteria for course design, logical argumentation, a taxonomic approach to scientific vocabulary, function of a type of particle in a chemistry textbook, verb forms and functions in some medical texts, anaphoric functions of some demonstrative noun phrases in scientific and technological English, tense usage, and a comparative analysis of English and Romanian in scientific and technical discourse. The second section deals with designing modular materials, developing a reading curriculum, subjects and objects in English for special purposes (esp) materials, thoughts from the classroom on esp materials, interpretation of "information transfer," the case study as needs assessment in esp, and processing learning texts. The third section is a bibliography of Louis Trimble's works. (Amh)

Preposition omission by Korean and Chinese/Mandarin English learners: Possible evidence for transfer by Dae-Eun Kim( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation provides empirical data referent to preposition omission in the English interlanguage of Korean and Chinese/Mandarin native speakers. Baseline data comes from English native speakers. Using level of English acquisition as a control variable as determined by a cloze procedure, the two experimental groups and the native English baseline group responded to a grammatical judgment task. For each sentence offered, participants responded as to the grammatical accuracy of the sentence and offered a corrected version when the sentence was judged to be incorrect
English language development in context: The peer social networks and interactions of Spanish-speaking adolescent immigrant students by Avary Carhill-Poza( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this dissertation was to better understand the role of social context in the academic English language development of adolescent immigrant students with a particular focus on peers. The frame of my dissertation draws from three literatures: an ecological model recognizing that multiple social contexts contribute to individual student outcomes in tandem with cognitive factors, interaction theories in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) emphasizing the importance of interactions to learn academic English, and social network theory which conceptualizes relationships as measurable resources

In addition, familiarity led to considerably higher accuracy in verb tense and lexical choice, though there were no significant correlations among familiarity, interest level, and frequency of conversing on a given topic. Additionally, the transcripts obtained from a subset of eight participants were analyzed qualitatively to examine possible L1 transfer in L2 learners' IL variation in English. The findings revealed possible evidence of L1 transfer on participants' IL production in English, though extent of transfer was not sensitive to familiarity of discourse domain

Language transfer : cross-linguistic influence in language learning by Terence Odlin( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author shows how similarities and differences between languages can influence grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation acquisition. Terence Odlin reconsiders a question that many language teachers and educational researchers have addressed: How much influence can a learner's native language have in making the acquisition of a new language easy or difficult? Odlin analyzes and interprets research showing many ways in which similarities and differences between languages can influence the acquisition of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In addition, he provides a detailed look at work on other areas important for the study of transfer, including discourse, individual variation, and sociolinguistic factors. Language teachers, applied linguists, and educational researchers will find this volume extremely valuable to their work
