Albers and Moholy-Nagy : from the Bauhaus to the new world by Josef Albers( Book )

18 editions published in 2006 in English and Spanish and held by 587 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This beautifully illustrated book highlights the contrasts and correspondences in the lives and work of two of Modernism's greatest innovators, Josef Albers (1888-1976) and László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1947). Beginning in the 1930s, Albers and Moholy-Nagy each developed a rigorously abstract language that condensed art to its visual fundamentals: line, color, texture, light, and form. This language experienced a creative explosion during their Bauhaus years, when both artists moved freely between media and disciplines. Essays by leading scholars follow the artists' separate paths through to their emigration to the United States, where each continued to push tirelessly the conventions of artistic practice--Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and then at Yale University, and Moholy-Nagy in Chicago at the New Bauhaus School and the Institute of Design. As highly influential teachers, Albers and Moholy-Nagy became important catalysts for the transmission of Modernist ideas from Europe to America
The drawings of Josef Albers by Nicholas Fox Weber( Book )

10 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shortly after Josef Albers's death in 1976, a scarcely known and surprising segment of his work was discovered: the representational drawings he made before going to the Bauhaus in 1920. These early works-- self-portraits, portraits of friends and relatives, views of houses and public buildings in his native Westphalia, sketches of animals, travel scenes, nudes, caricatures of his students-- reveal a playful and informal side of Albers's character, as well as the root of his fascination with the interplay of two- and three-dimensional space. Presented in conjunction with some of his later abstract drawings, which are characterized by the familiar geometry of his work from the Bauhaus on, they round out our sense of the complex but consistent themes that shaped his evolution as a pioneer painter, teacher, and color theorist"--Publisher's description

Josef Albers : formulation : articulation by T. G Rosenthal( Book )

9 editions published in 2006 in English and German and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Josef Albers's Formulation: Articulation, issued as a limited edition set of prints in 1972 and published here in book form for the first time, is a unique opportunity to understand the ideas and methods of one of the most influential artists and theorists of the twentieth century. Albers drew on over forty years' work in a variety of media - woodcuts, sandblasted glass pictures and oil paintings - for these rigorous yet lyrical explorations of colour and form, and they can be seen as the summation of his creative life." "All the elements of Albers's thinking and experience on colour and geometrical relationships are embodied in Formulation: Articulation. The series of prints were carefully sequenced by the artist so that they can be examined and appreciated for their visual interaction or as striking works of art in their own right. Statements by Albers about the images are provided on two fold-out sections and the text by the art critic T.G. Rosenthal sets the volume within the context of Albers's life and work."--Jacket

Josef Albers : interaction by Josef Albers( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and German and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Josef Albers (1888-1976) was one of the leading pioneers of 20th-century modernism; he was an extraordinary teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist, who is best known for the 'Homage to the Square' (painted 1950-76) and 'Interaction of Color', published by Yale University Press in 1963. This generously illustrated overview of Albers's work, accompanying the first major exhibition on the artist in more than thirty years, features all aspects of his long, creative career. Beginning with Albers's time at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, the publication follows the artist to America and describes major themes of his work there as well as the importance of his frequent travels to Mexico. Paintings, prints, furniture, household objects, works in glass, photographs, and pre-Columbian sculptures are beautifully reproduced and discussed by a team of experts. The juxtaposition of Renaissance sculptures and icons with paintings by Albers underlines the intellectual and spiritual dimensions of his art, and Albers's influence on 1960s Minimalist art is also explored. Including a comprehensive biography, the book convincingly demonstrates how this great artist transformed modern design by using color, surface, and space to challenge the perception of the viewer."

Josef Albers in Mexico by Josef Albers( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On his first trip to Mexico, in 1935, Josef Albers (1888-1976) encountered the magnificent architecture of ancient Mesoamerica. He later remarked in a letter to Vasily Kandinsky, a former colleague at the Bauhaus, "Mexico is truly the promised land of abstract art." With his wife, artist Anni Albers (1899- 1994), Josef Albers visited Mexico and other Latin American countries nearly a dozen times from 1935-67. They saw numerous archeological sites and monuments, especially in Mexico and Peru. On each visit, he took hundreds of black-and-white photographs of the pyramids, shrines, and sanctuaries at these sites, often grouping multiple images printed at various scales onto 8 by 10 inch sheets. Albers's experiences in Latin America offer an essential context for understanding his paintings and prints, particularly from his Homage to the Square and Variant/Adobe series, examples of which are featured in this show. Surveying works in all media, Josef Albers: Minimum Media, Maximum Effect offers a new comprehensive monograph of Josef Albers (1888-1976) focusing on the artist's abiding concern for clarity and simplicity. As the title suggests, Albers strove to attain the maximum effect with minimal media. This selection of works demonstrates the continuity of Albers' austere and luminous vision, as it permeated his teaching, furniture and design objects, photography, typographical design and his writings, from his early years as a schoolteacher in Germany and the Bauhaus years to the end of his artistic and teaching career at Yale. His prolific artistic output ranged from furniture design and figurative line drawing to engraving and painting, including his renowned Homage to the Square. This substantial, 362-page survey is exhilarating in its scope, encompassing some 170 works, archival documents such as Albers' notes and journals, and dozens of essays and scholarly discourses on art, pedagogy and philosophy. This carefully designed volume illuminates Albers' artistry and teachings and allows the reader to appreciate the incredible technical skill and the clarity of vision behind his apparently simple works
