The John Mercer papers is a collection of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and newsletters compiled by John Mercer and relating to the Center for Soviet and East-European Studies in the Performing Arts, and its director Herbert Marshall. The majority of the records are clippings from the Daily Egyptian documenting the activities of Herbert Marshall and the Center including exhibits, editorials on Soviet arts and culture, research and activities regarding director Sergei Eisenstein, director Sergei Paradjanov and Marshall's campaign to free him from prison, a Paul Robeson exhibit, Fredda Brilliant and her sculptures, controversy regarding the Delyte Morris statue, and the closure of the Center. The newsletters also provide information on the Center's activities and archives, visiting Soviet and Eastern European artists to Southern Illinois University, research projects, conferences, and lectures.
