Developmental theory and language disorders( )

18 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,695 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The chapters in this volume arise from presentations at a unique conference on typical and atypical language development held in Madison, USA in 2002. This joint meeting of the International Association for the Study of Child Language, and the Symposium for Research in Child Language Disorders brought together - for the first time in such large numbers - researchers from these two distinct but related fields. The week-long schedule of the conference allowed for an in-depth interrogation of their theoretical positions, methodologies and findings. In the contributions to this volume we have put

The clinical assessment of language comprehension by Jon F Miller( Book )

5 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Building from an in-depth discussion of the theoretical issues surrounding language comprehension assessment, this volume provides 26 informal, nonstandardized procedures and activities designed to assess language comprehension in children from infancy to age 10. Assessment procedures are conveniently organized into three developmental stages: emerging language for children 8-24 months of age, developing language for children 24-60 months of age, and language for learning for children 5-10 years of age. Because these procedures can be tailored to the abilities, interests, and testing requirements of each child, they are ideal for children who are very young, who are functioning at low developmental levels, or who cannot respond typically to standardized tests." "During the testing process, professionals initiate enjoyable activities that motivate children to interact naturally in a warm, friendly environment. Once the child is unable to respond to the majority of the items probed, professionals end the activity and record their findings on the reproducible score sheets supplied in the manual. These assessment activities evaluate not only the literal aspects of the child's language comprehension but also the child's ability to respond to social context cues. As a result, professionals are able to obtain a more complete picture of the child's language abilities." "In addition to the procedures and accompanying score sheets, this manual includes a number of features that help make language comprehension assessment simple - step-by-step instructions, concise explanations, illustrative case studies, and a useful glossary. A refreshing alternative to standardized tests, The Clinical Assessment of Language Comprehension will help speech-language pathologists and other professionals pinpoint children's comprehension abilities and turn assessments into targeted intervention programs."--Jacket

Assessing language production using SALT software : a clinician's guide to language sample analysis( Book )

3 editions published between 2011 and 2016 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Digital recordings of narratives were sent to the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) transcription services laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where faculty and staff are widely recognized as experts in SALT software, transcription, and training. Language sampling is recognized as a gold standard for assessing children's expressive language skills, and with more than twenty years of research, SALT software is a thoroughly-developed and commonly used tool for analyzing language samples of Englishspeaking and Spanish-speaking children. Narrative language transcription was completed by highly trained bilingual (English-Spanish) transcribers; specifically, training involved approximately ten hours of training and transcription practice with the laboratory manager. This second edition provides updates on the language sample analysis (LSA) process and the release of a new version of SALT softwar by Miller & Iglesias in 2015

This publication discusses the role of Language Sample Analysis (lsa) in identifying language disorders, providing detail necessary to initiate a focused intervention program, and providing a method for monitoring progress in language intervention. Section 1 provides an overview of the lsa process and types of language disorders, while Section 2 discusses the sampling process in detail. Section 3 describes the transcription process and coding conventions; Section 4 describes analytical procedures that cover various aspects of productive language. A step-by-step review of a case study is included in Section 5. Section 6 reviews the issues and concerns in documenting language disorders in linguistically and culturally diverse populations as well as in children with cognitive, sensory, or motor deficits. Section 7 explains how language sample analysis is applied in the evaluation team process. Appendices contain: (1) the Reference Database, a set of criterion-referenced measures of language performance for children ages 3-13; (2) transcript entry conventions for computer and hand analysis procedures; (3) a list of approximately 50 resources for further information; (4) glossary of terms; (5) information on cost-effectiveness of lsa; (6) sample case studies; and (7) materials on how to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse children. References accompany most sections. (Jdd)
Transcript instruction for SALT : a tutorial by Mary Evelyn Moore( )

2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

SALT, which stands for Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts, is a set of computer programs designed to help you analyze and interpret language samples from one or more speakers during communicative interaction. These programs incorporate the view that children exhibit a variety of oral language problems all of which are not classified as "language disorders". The Basic SALT Program provides clinicians and researchers with the means to transcribe language samples into a common format and to compute a series of general analysis of lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, rate, fluency, and error categories. The Transcript instruction for SALT tutorial shows the user how to manage digitized videotaped files. The split screen design allows the user to watch and listen to a video language sample while transcribing it on the same screen without leaving the keyboard. There are 12 lessons
