Agricultural pollution of the Great Lakes Basin : combined report by Canada and the United States by Canada( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report concerns pollution abatement in the Great Lakes Basin, specifically influenced by agricultural and related sources, including runoff and release of nutrients, pesticides, herbicides, and degradation by-products as affected by agricultural chemicals, runoff from animal and poultry production, and sedimentation. Current planning, advisory and regulatory functions of the two Governments is discussed. Some basic research of the joint study-group is summarized. Improper manure spreading or storing, and runoff from livestock feeding areas have the greatest potential impact on water quality. Pesticide contribution to environmental contamination is receiving closer scrutiny. The erosion problem is measured in sediment load in streams and deposition rate in reservoirs. High chloride levels, measured in tributary waters, seem related to road salt application. The adequacy of current legislation is discussed

Planting the first seed : creating opportunities for ethnic farmers and young farmers in the greenbelt( )

3 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The face of Ontarians is ever-changing: the latest statistics show that 54 per cent of Canada's visible minority population resides in Ontario. However, this is not mirrored in rural Ontario and hence the farming community. As a result, Canada's multi-ethnicity is not reflected in what is being grown in Ontario. Ontario's farming community is aging and younger farmers face great difficulty taking up farming as a career. And there are large and diverse communities of immigrants in the GTA, who do have a background in agriculture and would like to farm for niche ethnic markets but do not have the means to do so. The purpose of this study is to determine the barriers that exist for both ethnic farmers and interested young farmers to work the land, and to develop market opportunities for farmers in the Greenbelt, an area of prime agricultural land surrounded by the Golden Horseshoe where many immigrants in Canada reside. With the number of farms, farmland and farmers dwindling, the importance of creating opportunities for a new generation of ethnically diverse farmers and young farmers, and of helping young farm family members to take over their farm, becomes exceedingly more important and urgent
