Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler( )

1,274 editions published between 1936 and 2019 in 9 languages and held by 18,057 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Composed in 1902, this purely instrumental work followed upon three symphonies that had all included vocal parts. This and the opening trumpet motif, an allusion to the rhythm that begins Beethoven's Fifth have been interpreted as Mahler's return to a more conventional idea of the symphonic genre

Mariss Jansons's international reputation as a Mahler conductor is indisputable. During his tenure as chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Jansons did not record a full cycle of Mahler symphonies. With this new 2016 recording that project is now nearing completion. Mahler himself led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Dutch premiere of the Seventh in October 1909. How must the audience in the Main Hall have reacted to this whimsical work with its night-time atmosphere and eerie sounds? Although this vast symphony, featuring a number of unconventional instruments like the mandolin and guitar, did not catch on right away, it would slowly but surely win the hearts of music lovers everywhere

David Zinman continues his acclaimed Mahler symphony cycle with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the release of Symphony No. 8. Popularly known as the 'Symphony of a Thousand' because its 1910 premiere featured an orchestra of over 150 musicians and chorus of over 850 voices, it was one of the rare works of Mahler to be so well received in his lifetime and the last he presided over before his death

"Using the composer's own sketches, and a thorough knowledge of his orchestral style, Remo Mazetti [sic], Jr.'s reconstruction of Mahler's 10th Symphony, in its world premiere recording, gives us a vision of how this extraordinary work might sound if Mahler had lived to complete it."--Container insert
Symphony no. 3 by Gustav Mahler( )

283 editions published between 1966 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 4,624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A masterpiece first played by the Gürzenich-Orchester. The premiere of Mahler's Third Symphony took place in June 1902 in Krefeld (not far from Düsseldorf) but it was indeed the Gürzenich-Orchester of Cologne who gave that first performance, greeted with acclaim. This was not always the composer's experience with his masterpieces. Originally conceived as a hymn to Nature, in which the inert chaos of the opening movement is gradually left behind, the work calls for enormous forces (large orchestra, women's choir, boys' choir and contralto soloist) and, at each hearing, leaves an unforgettable impression on the audience. Such was the case in October 2018, when François-Xavier Roth led the esteemed successors of the work's first interpreters in this latest Mahler adventure."--Prestomusic.com

Symphony no. 2 : "Resurrection" by Gustav Mahler( )

106 editions published between 1967 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 3,908 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony started life as a single-movement tone poem called Todtenfeier (Funeral Rites). Completed in 1888 one year before Richard Strauss' Death and Transfiguration it echoed the composer's vision of seeing himself lying dead in a funeral bier surrounded by flowers. ... Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä have received praise for their previous Mahler recordings ('Vänskä and the orchestra are among the finest exponents of Mahler's music...', allmusic.com). The team is here joined by soloists Ruby Hughes and Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale in the deeply moving close to the vast and tumultuous panorama that is his Second Symphony."--Amazon.com
