Changing scenes : encounters between European and Finnish fin de siècle( )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Six articles in Changing scenes represent the ongoing reassessment of fin de siècle literature in Finnish research. The period was seen in earlier research as something of a national renaissance or golden age and interpreted in the light of its national symbols and meanings. Only recently has more attention been paid to its international dimensions and its role in the modernisation of Finnish culture. In particular the spotlight has been trained on the reflection in Finnish literature of manifestations of the degeneration thinking so common in Europe at that time. Research has also picked out works and writers that featured less in earlier studies. One modernist Finnish poet, Neustadt Prize-winning Paavo Haavikko, is also examined in an article representing the latest Finnish research in this field

Trapped in equality : women as legal persons in the modernisation of Finnish law by Anu Pylkkänen( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the first comprehensive account of developments in legal equality in Finland from the late 19th through the early 21st century. The book demonstrates that equality is never a status or a state of affairs that either exists or does not exist. It is rather a continuous and controversial process of creating meanings that are bound to time and place. By exploring legal discourses, the book shows how in Finnish legal history, the formal and symmetrical understanding of equality has been dominant. However, this understanding has been informed by utilitarian arguments rather than the true protection of women as individuals. The assimilation of women into the male model of equality has been the powerful thread of equality policies and the law, but the gendered understandings of legal personality have imbued the formal and neutral law
