Sarajevo by Tom Stoddart( Book )

10 editions published between 1995 and 1998 in English and Italian and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1992 British photojournalist Tom Stoddart was gravely wounded in Sarajevo, but he returned to the besieged city during the grueling winter of 1993 to record the plight of its remaining citizens in their daily efforts to survive destruction, bereavement, and fear. Portraying not frontline fighters but the ordinary citizens who endured the brunt of the siege, the images created by Stoddart during his two visits convey the trauma of war in the faces and gestures of those forced to assimilate it into their daily lives. Women carrying shopping bags run for cover across an intersection that became known as Sniper Alley; a cellist breaks down in tears after performing a requiem for a dead friend; a burnt, disfigured boy, injured by a mortar while playing near his home, waits quietly in an emergency room. Stoddart's photographs also show Sarajevans carrying on with their lives, combatting their apprehension and grief, picking their way through shattered streets. An essay by a leading Bosnian writer sets the siege of Sarajevo in the context of a war based on deep religious and ethnic fissures and exacerbated by international indifference. But the photographs themselves, while depicting tragedy, are testament to the resiliency and courage of those who faced its brutality every day
Mediterranean by Mimmo Jodice( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and Italian and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jodice's deeply original work reveals not only an experimental creative process, but also an informed and unique vision addressing a subject matter - archaeology - that has never before been considered in this way. His particular interpretations of such Classical icons remind us of the continuing impact of the Mediterranean world on our present lives, and reinstill a sense of epic, of adventure, of wonder, and even of providence - all so often missing in contemporary culture. Jodice provides us with a vision of the Mediterranean that is rich and vast, letting symbolic images become links between the experience of diverse peoples, and between ourselves and our distant ancestors

Between exile and asylum : an eastern epistolary by Predrag Matvejević( Book )

16 editions published between 1994 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A collection of letters, written by a most extraordinary and yet typical representative of the East European intelligentsia, sent from Moscow, Mostar, and more recently Paris and Rome, where the author has lived since leaving war-torn Bosnia." "Matvejevic first went to the USSR in 1972, as a guest of the Writers' Union, and described to his father the land that Matvejevic senior had not seen since leaving Odessa in 1921 (and that he would never see again in his lifetime). He chronicles the dissolution of the USSR, its final twenty years of existence, from the unique vantage point of a semi-insider - a half-Russian, non-aligned (Yugoslav) dissident intellectual rooted in the public debates and artistic life of both Western, Eastern and Central Europe. This story, moreover, parallels the simultaneous dissolution of Yugoslavia, to which the narrator refers increasingly as the book nears its end."--BOOK JACKET
