Cool pose : the dilemmas of black manhood in America by Richard Majors( Book )

10 editions published between 1991 and 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 925 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The United States has the highest per-capita imprisonment rate in the world. In 1990, the prison population across the country jumped 8.2 percent. On an average day, 100,000 crimes are committed and over 35,000 people are arrested. The judicial and criminal justice systems are overwhelmed by this growing burden, and are ill-equipped to handle the large number of individuals who suffer from some form of mental disorder - roughly 35 percent of those currently in the criminal justice system. A lack of training and understanding has led to confusion and inadequate control in the treatment of these individuals. At what point should criminal justice personnel turn the management of these cases over to mental health professionals?" "Abnormal Behavior and the Criminal Justice System examines the issues behind the supervision of these criminals whose special needs are often neglected. Part I includes an analysis of the criminal personality and the psychopath. Drawing on the cases of such noted figures as Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, the Hillside Strangler and others, Robert G. Meyer examines different aspects of deviant personalities. These types include the Antisocial Personality Disorder, Impulse Disorders, Alcohol and Drug-Abuse Disorders, Sexual Disorders, Organic Brain Damage Disorders, and Anxiety, Dissociative, and Sleep Disorders. Part II looks at topics that are of direct application and practical consequence to the criminal justice student and practitioner. These include violence, the detection of deception, incompetency, criminal responsibility, civil commitment and the prediction of dangerousness, psychopharmacology in the criminal justice system, and specific criminal justice personnel issues."
Keepers of the culture : the power of tradition in women's lives by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 713 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Keepers of the Culture, Janet Mancini Billson brings new voices to the feminist debate-the seldom heard voices of women of color, Native women, and rural and immigrant women. Many live in small communities in social or geographic isolation from the middle class white North American mainstream that has until now dominated our perceptions of women's identity and relations between the sexes.Today's women face powerful challenges to break with the traditions of the past, coupled with a deep need and responsibility to preserve the strong and unique elements of their heritage. We all have much to gain from understanding women whose very definition of liberation and power may differ greatly from our own. Keepers of the Culture offers new insights into the questions of why some women embrace the ideals of the women's movement and others are hostile to it. By exploring women's lives in seven distinct cultural communities in Canada-Iroquois, Blood, Inuit, Mennonite, Jamaican, Chinese, and Ukrainian-Billson explores how their roles and the balance of power between men and women have shifted as their communities have moved from traditional to more contemporary life styles. In the course of her research, Billson lived among the women she interviewed and shared their daily lives, bringing richness and depth to the portraits of these women few of us know. Through their stories, Billson shows us the dilemmas all women face as they work to preserve the positive parts of their culture that provide identity and closeness among generations, while at the same time casting off the negative parts of their heritage that may hold them back. -- Publisher description

Female well-being : toward a global theory of social change by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

12 editions published between 2005 and 2013 in English and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Extrait de la couverture : "This global survey starts from the assumption that the significant transformations in women's lives deserve to be fully documented and interpreted. Janet Mancini Billson and Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban tackle the complexities of soical change by using data from countries in every world region to illustrate the most critical challenges that women faced during the last century - challenges that are also likely to shape the 21st century. Global knowledge and feminism dovetailed in the 20th century, fed by international air travel, telecommunications, the Internet, and a growing awareness that solving female oppression would improve the lot of all humankind. The authors therefore adopt a strong international comparative, cross-cultural, and feminist framework that uncovers the fundamental processes that promote, sustain, or degrade the female condition."
Inuit women : their powerful spirit in a century of change by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

The definitive study of the Inuit during a time of rapid change. Based on fourteen years of research and fieldwork, this analysis focuses on the challenges facing Inuit women as they enter the twenty-first century. Written shortly after the creation of Nunavut, a new province carved out of traditional Inuit homelands in the Canadian North, this compelling book combines conclusions drawn from the authors' ethnographic research with the stories of Inuit women and men, told in their own words
Pathways to manhood : young Black males struggle for identity by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Pathways to Manhood, published in cloth as Strategic Styles: Coping in the Inner City, Janet Mancini Billson studies five young boys who grew up in Roxbury, Massachusetts, during the intense racial and political turmoil of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Using data from Harvard's Pathways to Identity project, she analyzes how healthy ego striving develops in the social and physical decay of an inner-city environment." "The author draws a rich and absorbing portrait of each boy and of his life. Although they grew up in the same social context, the boys became very different individuals. In a new preface to this expanded edition, Billson maintains that it is still vitally important to understand the coping styles that young black males develop in the face of adversity." "Bernard E. Bruce traces what happened to the five boys, who are now men in their forties, in his poignant epilogue, "From Boys to Men." A new chapter on intervention strategies shows how parents, teachers, and others who work with inner-city youth can most effectively support positive coping styles. Graphic representations help visualize both the styles and the intervention strategies." "This classic book is a valued resource for parents; for those who work in the helping professions, education, and the criminal justice system; and for students of sociological theory, social psychology, human development and race relations."--BOOK JACKET

Pathways to Manhood: Young Black Males Struggle for Identity. Exp anded Second Edition by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The stories of five young black men growing up in the Roxbury area of Boston (Massachusetts) in the late 1960s and early 1970s illustrate the difficulties and coping required to reach adulthood in the city. The young men were part of the Pathways to Identity project of Harvard University, a longitudinal study that has, since 1966, interviewed 61 young men in the city. A portrait is drawn of each of the five adolescents and their lives. Although they grew up in similar urban circumstances, they became very different individuals with differing coping styles. Chapters are titled: (1) "Strategic Styles: Individual Responses to Social Reality"; (2) "The Conformist: Keith Sutton"; (3) "The Retreater: Ernie Hayes"; (4) "The Tough Guy: Leroy Duncan"; (5) "The Actor: Dave Cooper"; (6)"The Cool Guy: Hank Nelson"; (7) "Toward Manhood: Growth and Change in Styles over Time"; and (8) "Fostering Nondeviant Styles against the Odds: Toward a Model of Intervention Strategies." Chapter 8 is new to this edition, and discusses intervention strategies. The epilogue discusses what has happened to three of the subjects since the study; two could not be located. Appendixes present the individual and focal group interview schedules and discussion of strategic styles versus selected variables. (Contains multiple references.) (Sld)

In Search of the Silken Purse: Factors in Attrition Among First-Generation Students. Revised by Janet Mancini Billson( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The influence of family background, including parental education, on college student attrition was evaluated with first- and second-generation American students. A total of 701 enrolled students and those who left before graduation were surveyed at a primarily residential private liberal arts college and at a primarily commuter state-supported liberal arts college. It was found that first-generation students approach the college experience with about the same degree of normative congruence as second-generation students with regard to their expectations. They value higher education for the intellectual growth and for the career preparation they anticipate receiving. In respect to a second aspect of social integration, structural or affiliational integration, first-generation students were at a disadvantage in comparison to the students whose parents had significant experience with the college or university setting. First-generation students suffer from a lower level of structural integration since they are less likely to live on campus, be involved in campus organizations, meet or pursue their most important friendships on campus, or work on campus. As for academic integration, first-generation students appear to have equally high aspirations regarding level of education they expect to attain, but those who withdraw are not as strongly convinced that college is the only or best route to life success. First-generation students appear to have lower congruity between their values toward education and their parents' values; receive less support of all types from their parents; and have heavier job loads. These factors increase their vulnerability to attrition. A bibliography is appended. (Sw)
