In 1973, Richard N. Billings and John Greenya contracted with AFSCME to write a history of the union, resulting in the 1974 book Power to the Public Worker . As part of their research for the book, Billings and Greenya interviewed AFSCME president Jerry Wurf and secretary-treasurer Joseph "Joe" Ames. Collection consists of interview transcripts and recordings for eight interviews. Interviews primarily cover the period of Wurf's ascendency and presidency. Ames and Wurf reminisce and offer frank opinions about their entry into the labor movement and AFSCME, milestones in AFSCME history, personal achievements, and other individuals important in AFSCME during that time
