Mary Stuart's Scotland : the landscapes, life, and legends of Mary Queen of Scots by David Steel( Book )

13 editions published between 1987 and 1995 in English and held by 305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Four hundred years after Mary's death David and Judy Steel revisit the places she knew during her brief and troubled time in Scotland: Linlithgow Palace, her birthplace, still magnificent in its roofless grandeur; Stirling Castle, her nursery, and the lovely island priory of Inchmahone where the infant queen found refuge; Edinburgh, where she experienced her greatest triumphs and deepest humiliations; the fortresses of the wild Border lands and the rebellious North, and the palaces where she enjoyed music, dancing and the splendours of court life; the scenes of her infatuated courtship with Darnley and of his violent murder, of her abduction by Bothwell and of her last disastrous marriage; her prison on the tiny island of Lochleven; and finally Dundrennan, the peaceful abbey from which she fled in a fishing boat to England - to imprisonment and death." --Cover

Man of letters : the early life and love letters of Robert Chambers by Robert Chambers( Book )

1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Robert Chambers' life (1802-71) is a classic rags-to-riches story. Forced to leave his school in Peebles at the age of 13 after his father was swindled and bankrupted, he set himself up as an Edinburgh bestseller with an original stock consisted of his old schoolbooks. Yet with his brother William he set up one of the largest publishing houses in the English-speaking world (W. and R. Chambers); he became a respected popular writer (with the support of Sir Walter Scott) and in 1844 published an anonymous and controversial book on evolution theory, Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation. Man of Letter shows the more sensitive side to the acute businessman, weaving together his private letters and unpublished reminiscences. It describes his colourful early life in Peebles, his initial struggle in Edinburgh and his touching love-affair with nineteen-year-old Anne Kirkwood, conducting almost entirely by post. Painstakingly researched, this is a delightful human story which also gives a unique insight into nineteenth-century Scottish life. -- from back cover
