The broken spears : the Aztec account of the conquest of Mexico by Miguel León Portilla( Book )

18 editions published between 1962 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 709 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For hundreds of years, the history of the conquest of Mexico and the defeat of the Aztecs has been told in the words of the Spanish victors. Miguel León-Portilla has long been at the forefront of expanding that history to include the voices of indigenous peoples. In this new and updated edition of his classic The Broken Spears, León-Portilla has included accounts from native Aztec descendants across the centuries. These texts bear witness to the extraordinary vitality of an oral tradition that preserves the viewpoints of the vanquished instead of the victors. León-Portilla's new Postscript reflects upon the critical importance of these unexpected historical accounts"--Page 4 of cover

€English: €The work, with 101 chapters, is divided into three parts or treatises: the first contains the history of Mexico, from its origins to the conquest by Cortés and his expedition to Las Hibueras, Honduras. The second is dedicated to the Mexican gods, rituals, festivities and temples, and the third to the Aztec calendar. It is illustrated with over one hundred, quill-drawn miniatures which represent scenes from the text, mostly located in the chapter headers; some are cut-outs that belonged to another book. Copied from local, indigenous models, they contain scenes of high ethnographical value regarding the history of Mexico before and after the conquest. Brother Diego, like other missionaries, undoubtedly wrote his history to assist in teaching and evangelising the Indians; to do so, it was necessary to know them beforehand, as "for as much work as is put into it", assures the Dominican monk, nothing would be achieved without knowing "all the types of religion in which they lived". And thus, by observing the customs of the natives (rituals, dances, chants, festivities &, he left us a detailed vision of the indigenous world gathered shortly after the conquest, which makes this a firsthand source and compulsory text for ethnographers and historians

Llamamos mito a algo fingido.
