Three centuries of American prints from the National Gallery of Art by National Gallery of Art (U.S.)( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 524 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nearly 200 American prints, representing more than 100 artists, and dating from the colonial era to the present day, are brought together in this unprecedented volume from the National Gallery of Art to commemorate its collection and recent acquisitions. The artists featured range from Paul Revere through James McNeil Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Louise Nevelson, Romare Bearden, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Chuck Close, and Kara Walker. The works date from essentially every period in American history, so major art and historical themes running through the collection are readily visible. Lending context, twelve contributing authors discuss the varied themes in American art. Biographies of the artists and a glossary of printmaking terms are also featured. Since its founding in 1941, the National Gallery of Art has assiduously collected American prints with the help of many generous donors. The Gallery's American print collection has grown from nearly 1,900 prints in 1950 to more than 22,500 prints today. The collection was recently transformed by the acquisition of an extraordinary group of 5,200 American prints brought together by Reba and Dave Williams

Henri Rousseau : archaic naiveté by Henri Rousseau( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Born into a family of tradespeople in Laval, France, Henri Rousseau became a customs and excise officer in the customs house in Paris in 1871, a job that earned him the nickname Le Douanier ("the customs officer"). Rousseau was an enthusiastic self-taught artist. Nourished by themes in the popular imagination, Rousseau's painting expresses a vision of reality, populated by iconic figures outlined with hieratic force against flat blocks of saturated colour and fantastic spaces--a vision long branded as naive, ingenuous, and uncultivated. This book demonstrates how fully Rousseau Le Douanier's masterpieces are part of this archaic trend, and of the world of art in general, from his dream-like exotic landscapes to his still-lifes. They are shown alongside works signed by the likes of Picasso, Gaugain, Frida Kahlo, and Carlo Carrà
Maria Lassnig by Maria Lassnig( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) was one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. This timely publication spans her prolific career from the 1940s to her later life. Lassnig developed a singular aesthetic, making boldly expressive, brightly coloured oil paintings with human figures always at the centre of her compositions. Alongside her signature self-portraits, the book features her paintings showing bodies morphed with objects and mechanical devices, examples of Lassnig's still lives, and rarely seen paintings triggered by political events. A collection of new essays provide a fascinating context for understanding Lassnig's extensive oeuvre. Setting her work within the broader context of contemporary debates, this important new publication reveals an artist of huge international significance

Künstler und Propheten : eine geheime Geschichte der Moderne 1872-1972 = Artists and prophets : a secret history of modern art 1872-1972( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Egon Schiele saw himself as a visionary and prophetic artist, Frantisek Kupka forged an abstract style of painting infused with spiritist principles, Joseph Beuys called under the rubric social sculpture for social change due to creative actions, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an ecological crusader whose spiral paintings were holistic in essence. These pioneering artistic attitudes and developments would have not come about without contact with several prophets. Some of these were artist-naturists, others were modern-day Christs, while still others saw themselves as social revolutionaries of a kind. Their relevance for modern art remains a largely untold story. Today, their names Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, as well as Friedrich Muck-Lamberty and Ludwig Christian Haeusser have almost been forgotten
