Rosenblat representa un periodo, ciertamente fructífero y prolífico, de la filología hispana y, en particular, de la filología que impulsó Amado Alonso desde Buenos Aires. Vemos así sucederse en sus trabajos las referencias a Menéndez Pidal, a Henríquez Ureña, a Cuervo, a Wagner, Navarro Tomás, Lenz, Catalán, Lapesa, Guitarte y, claro, a Alonso. Uno puede tomar distancia de las ideas e hipótesis planteadas por ellos; puede incluso levantar la voz ante los vacíos y especulaciones que a veces traen sus obras, pero nada de eso afecta el valor de sus trabajos ni su contribución con el desarrollo de la filología hispanoamericana y, en un ámbito más constreñido pero no de menor importancia, las críticas (a veces injustas y anacrónicas) no dañan su papel en el conocimiento de la historia del español de América y en el interés que despertaron hacia el contacto y la convivencia de las lenguas amerindias con la lengua que llevó Colón al Nuevo Mundo. Este libro está precisamente situado en ese momento de la historia de la lingüística y de la filología hispánicas y son, fundamentalmente, esos nombres el apoyo que ofrece Rosenblat cuando razona, describe y opina en los tres ensayos que componen el libro: I. Los conquistadores y su lengua; II. Contactos interlingüísticos en el mundo hispánico: el español y las lenguas indígenas de América; III. El debatido andalucismo del español de América. Todos están unidos por una orientación que integra el español en la vida de los pueblos americanos y en los usos y percepciones que acompañan la transformación del entorno prehispánico y el surgimiento de una realidad verbal y cultural compleja, impredecible y, en muchos aspecto, ignorada hasta la actualidad. --
