The animal kingdom : arranged in conformity with its organization by Georges Cuvier( Book )

12 editions published between 1827 and 1832 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), made a peer of France in 1819 in recognition of his work, was perhaps the most important European scientist of his day. His most famous work, Le Règne Animal, was published in French in 1817; Edward Griffith (1790-1858), a solicitor and amateur naturalist, embarked on in 1824, with a team of colleagues, an English version which resulted in this illustrated sixteen-volume edition with additional material, published between 1827 and 1835. Cuvier was the first biologist to compare the anatomy of fossil animals with living species, and he named the now familiar 'mastodon' and 'megatherium'. However, his studies convinced him that the evolutionary theories of Lamarck and St Hilaire were wrong, and his influence on the scientific world was such that the possibility of evolution was widely discounted by many scholars both before and after Darwin. Volume 6 is the first of three books on birds
Travels in Central Africa and explorations of the western Nile tributaries by John Petherick( )

8 editions published between 1869 and 1968 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1861, Welsh explorer and British consul for the Sudan John Petherick (1813-82) departed for Central Africa on a mission for the Royal Geographical Society, with his wife Katherine (1827-77). First published in 1869, this two-volume account is based on notes and letters mostly written by Katherine, and describes their journey to Gondokoro, bringing boats and supplies for Captains Speke and Grant. Her descriptions provide valuable insights into African customs and traditions, particularly with regards to the condition of women, as well as information on flora and fauna observed. The work also gives an account of the controversy in which Petherick was falsely accused of taking part in the slave trade. Volume 1 focuses on the first part of the Pethericks' trip, up to their meeting with Speke and Grant. Volume 2 contains letters and official documents that clarify this controversy and exonerate him, as well as several richly illustrated appendices describing the local fauna and flora
