From Aristotle's Poetics to Václav Havel, the debate about the nature and function of theatre has been marked by controversy. Daniel Gerould's landmark work, Theatre/Theory/Theatre, collects history's most influential Eastern and Western dramatic theorists--poets, playwrights, directors, and philosophers--whose ideas about theatre continue to shape its future. Each of Gerould's introductory essays shows fascinating insight into both the life and the theory of the author. From Horace to Soyinka, Corneille to Brecht, this is an indispensable compendium of the greatest dramatic theory ever written. (back cover)

Guillotine : its legend and lore by Daniel C Gerould( Book )

11 editions published between 1990 and 1996 in English and Polish and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From Publishers Weekly: Gerould presents 200 years of the most famous executioner's tool, the guillotine, from details of its use to its appearance in literature, the visual arts and music. His historical account ranges from the guillotine's invention in the early 1790s as a means of making capital punishment more humane--through instantaneous death-to its notoriety as the great symbol of France's Reign of Terror. Gerould offers reports of post-Terror balls for relatives of the guillotined and 19th-century medical experiments to discover if consciousness remains after the head is severed. Short chapters trace guillotine themes in Hugo and Dickens, Berlioz and the performances of '70s rock icon Alice Cooper, and others. He also presents tidbits about the cult of personality surrounding France's state executioners and about underpublicized use of the guillotine by the Nazis. Though Gerould (who edited American Melodrama) never quite gets around to his promised cultural interpretation of the guillotine's role in Western imagination, this book will find an audience among those fascinated by a device that has come to represent so much about modern revolution, human rights and terror

"The Little Theatre of the Green Goose was written by Konstanty Ildefons Galczynski (1905-53) who was one of Poland's most beloved poets. After World War II, he began work as a playwright, inventing a colorful theatre troupe of performers (animal and human) and contributing a new installment of The Little Theatre of the Green Goose each week to Przekroj, the Cracow literary magazine. Intended for reading only, The Green Goose went unperformed in Galczynski's life and was finally staged in 1955 and gained a permanent place in the theatre, becoming a force for the creation of the new Polish drama that flourished in the 1960s."--Jacket
Mr. Price, or, Tropical madness ; and, Metaphysics of a two-headed calf by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz( Book )

9 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mr. Price, Or Tropical Madness is a drama of heightened passion and greed among British colonists in Rangoon, who seem to have stepped out of Joseph Conrad's tales of the South Seas, Metaphysics of a Two-headed Calf, set in New Guinea and Australia, pits savage European imperialists against a native tribal chieftain whose fetish of a great golden frog offers greater insight into the mystery of existence than the Westerners' shallow rationalism. Both plays puncture the white rulers' poses of superiority and parody their images of the tropical Other. Also included in the volume are Witkacy's Foreword to Metaphysics of a Two-headed Calf, in which the playwright defends his concept of theatre as an autonomous art with a scenic language of its own, and an appendix containing a documentary literary of Witkacy's journey to Ceylon."--BOOK JACKET

Country house by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz( Book )

23 editions published between 1996 and 2004 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Country House, a ''''comedy with corpses, '''' is a wicked subversion of all those realistic psychological dramas of jealousy, adultery, murder and suicide that ask to be taken seriously. Witkacy''s send-up assumes the form of a ghost story full of surprises, in the course of which an entire family of four is gleefully dispatched to the other world. When it was first performed in 1923 in Torun, Country House was judged unsuitable for the general public because it derided moral, social and dramatic convention. Three years later, as directed by the playwright himself in Lwów, the drama proved an
