"The artist and scientist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was born in Frankfurt, Germany, into a middle-class family of publishers and artists. With her meticulous depictions of insect metamorphosis, she raised the standards of natural history illustration and helped give birth to the field of entomology. This book reproduces vivid color details of sixteen plates from the Getty's copy, is a vibrant encapsulation of Merian's book and features an engaging essay on Merian's life and work as well as an insect and plant identification guide."--[product description]

Flowers, butterflies, and insects : all 154 engravings from "Erucarum Ortus" by Maria Sibylla Merian( Book )

15 editions published between 1991 and 2013 in English and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The splendid engravings in this historic book combine beautiful images of roses, butterflies, tulips, caterpillars, and other specimens of plant and insect life in elegant full-page compositions. Representing a notable achievement from a great age of floral painting and the engraver's art, they reach across the centuries to us with undiminished freshness and appeal, revealing the most delicate nuances of natural forms with a scientist's eye for precise detail. These fine works represent not only a high point in the history of botanical and zoological art but also an important advance in scientific knowledge as well. The artist, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), was one of the first observers to comprehend and record the metamorphoses of insects, most notably the emergence of the butterfly from its caterpillar and chrysalis phases. Her Erucarum Ortus, whose engravings were originally published in the years 1679-1717, was a substantial contribution to the science of entomology and helped lay the foundations for Charles Linnaeus's later work in the classification of plant and animal species. This edition combines all 154 original engravings from her three-volume work on the insects of Europe. Students and lovers of the natural sciences as well as those of the arts and crafts will find these dazzling works a rich source of information and delight. Graphic artists, textile designers, and others will find it a versatile and royalty-free design resource that will earn a treasured place on their library shelves

"In 1699, the German entomologist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian set sail for Suriname, in South America. There she would produce a series of beautiful and scientifically accurate illustrations of the natural world which she encountered. These drawings, in which Merian aimed to explore the life-cycle of insects (then only partially understood), led to the publication of the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, a luxury volume which brought the wonders of the wildlife of Suriname to Europe. Maria Merian's Butterflies tells Merian's story through her works in the Royal Collection. Over three-hundred years after they were made, these meticulous, brilliant works celebrate a woman whose art and whose story are enduringly popular." from publisher's website

Maria Sibylla Merian & daughters : women of art and science by Ella Reitsma( Book )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With a single hair of the brush, Maria Sibylla Merian could convey the delicate wings of a butterfly, the minute bristles on a caterpillar, or a gleaming pupa with the insect just emerging. No other artist of her day could rival the brilliance and accuracy of her work. Queen Elizabeth II and the British Museum in London own many splendid works - reproduced in this book - by this German artist. Born in 1647 in Frankfurt, then the center of the publishing trade, Merian spent more than twenty-five years of her life in Amsterdam, where she died in 1717. Acknowledged and respected by artists and scientists alike, Maria Sibylla was a strong-minded, adventurous woman who, at the age of fifty-two, traveled to Suriname with her younger daughter to observe and draw insects, reptiles, and amphibians." "Ella Reitsma is the first to endeavour to distinguish between the hands of Maria Sibylla and her two daughters, Johanna Helena and Dorothea Maria. The author's research suggests that the two young women collaborated closely with their mother in the family business. Ella Reitsma has identified some of Merian's previously unknown contacts and connections, discovered new drawings, and unearthed new biographical information. The book, a lively and very readable blend of art journalism and science, is being published in conjunction with an exhibition of the work of Merian and her daughters at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles."--Jacket
