A thermodynamic analysis of a hybrid fossil geothermal power plant in which the low-grade geothermal energy is used for preheating the feedwater in a fossil-fired steam power plant is presented. By restricting the geofluid to sensible heat addition, the entropy production in this process can be reduced. This results in an overall improvement in the utilization of the two energy sources. The performance of the hybrid system is studied in terms of suitably defined figures of merit. These include criteria for the choice of the appropriate hybrid utilization strategy, given the finite nature of geothermal and fossil resources. The question of optimum bleed conditions in a cycle comprising both geothermal and regenerative feedwater heating is discussed

The technical features of the existing and planned geothermal power plants in Japan are surveyed. A description is given of the Geothermal Energy Research and Development Co., Ltd. (GERD) which has capabilities in all areas of geothermal power development, from exploratory geological activities through construction and operation of the plants. The survey includes reports on four types of plants: natural, dry steam; separated steam or ''single flash;'' separated steam/flash or ''double flash;'' and binary fluid. For each geothermal power plant, the following are included or discussed: exploration and geology of the site; wells and gathering system; turbine-generator; condenser, gas extractor and cooling tower; economic data; environmental effects; and plant operations. Many tables and figures are included, and a summary is given of the geothermal resource utilization efficiency for each operating plant. The purpose of this study is to examine the silica problem from the perspective of the power plant designer and to develop a procedure to enable a quick estimate to be made of the potential seriousness of the silica deposition problem for a wide variety of resources and for selected types of power plant. The method employs correlations for the equilibrium solubilities of quartz and amorphous silica and for the saturated liquid enthalpy and the latent heat of water substance. Single- and double-flash plants optimized for highest thermodynamic efficiency are considered. Binary-type plants are included generically without mention of cycle specifics. The results are presented both graphically and in tabular form, and the governing equations will be given in an easily-programmable form
