Flight to Arras by
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry(
Book
)
383 editions published between 1900 and 2021 in 12 languages and held by 1,919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Flight to Arras is Saint-Exupéry's recollection of the final shattering days during World War II when, though the defeat of France was imminent, a pitifully inadequate number of French pilots and their crews continued to risk their lives against the Germans. The action of the book takes place during a single reconnaissance mission over the burning city of Arras. But Saint-Exupéry transcends the gripping experience of the flight itself to refelect on why men fight and how they feel in the presence of death. - Back cover

In his first novel, Saint-Exupery pays homage to “those elemental divinities-night, day, mountain, sea, and storm,” turning an account of a routine mail flight from France to North Africa into an epic rendering of the pioneer days of commercial aviation. The book is also a poignant reminiscence of a tragic affair, in which the uncertainties of love and flight enhance the mystery of one another

33 days : [a memoir] by
Léon Werth(
Book
)
10 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 321 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A rare eyewitness account by an important author of fleeing the Nazis' march on Paris in 1940, featuring a never-before-published introduction by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. In June of 1940, Leon Werth and his wife fled Paris before the advancing Nazis Army. 33 Days is his eyewitness account of that experience, one of the largest civilian dispacements in history. Encouraged to write 33 Days by his dear friend, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author of The Little Prince, Werth finished the manuscript while in hiding in the Jura mountains. Saint-Exupery smuggled the manuscript out of Nazi-occupied France, wrote an introduction to the work and arranged for its publication in the United States by Brentanos. But the publication never came to pass, and Werth's manuscript would disappear for more than fifty years until the first French edition, in 1992. It has since become required reading in French schools. This, the first-ever English language translation of 33 Days, includes Saint-Exupery's original introduction for the book, long thought to be lost. It is presented it here for the first time in any language. After more than seventy years, 33 Days appears--complete and as it was fully intended"--

A sense of life by
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1956 and 1987 in 6 languages and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collection of writings by the author of Wind, Sand and Stars is the first English translation of Un Sens à la Vie -- a posthumously collected group of miscellaneous pieces written over a lifetime. These thoughtful, beautifully written essays are the expression of the leading principle of the famous aviator-philosopher-writer's life -- a deep humanism and a sense of the potential worth of the individual. Whether Saint-Exupéry turns his pen to Russia or Spain or an impending war in Europe, whether he draws from his intimate association with aviation, a belief in the spiritual significance of each individual determines his outlook. "Somewhere along the way we have made a wrong turn. Oh yes, the human anthill is richer than ever; we have at our disposal more material goods and greater leisure, yet we lack some essential thing that we cannot exactly define. As human beings we feel diminished; we have lost some of man's mysterious prerogatives." The wrong turn is evasive, the essential thing is illusive, yet Saint-Exupéry persists. From his first published piece, "The Aviator," through the last writings before his death, he searches for a definition, for a cause of man's loss of the "mysterious prerogatives" of the spirit.--Adapted from book jacket
