Prince Friedrich of Homburg : a drama by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

441 editions published between 1822 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 3,052 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A play based upon the historical Prince Friedrich II of Homburg. A hero of the Battle of Fehrbellin during the Prusso-Swedish Wars, Friedrich is nonetheless sentenced to death for disobeying orders. The play follows him as, faced with death, his mood shifts from horror to exultation, with him ultimately accepting the rule and control of the state which has condemned him
Michael Kohlhaas by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

616 editions published between 1844 and 2017 in 24 languages and held by 2,461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"You can send me to the scaffold, but I can make you suffer, and I mean to." Based on actual historic events, this thrilling saga of violence and retribution bridged the gap between medieval and modern literature, and speaks so profoundly to the contemporary spirit that it has been the basis of numerous plays, movies, and novels. It has become, in fact, a classic tale: that of the honorable man forced to take the law into his own hands. In this incendiary prototype, a minor tax dispute intensifies explosively, until the eponymous hero finds the forces of an entire kingdom, and even the great Martin Luther, gathered against him. But soon even Luther comes to echo the growing army of peasants asking, 'Isnt' Kohlhaas right?'
Der zerbrochne Krug [Weltliteratur für Kinder] by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

390 editions published between 1192 and 2018 in 5 languages and held by 1,282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Penthesilea : a tragic drama by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

The passionate drama of Achilles and Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons
The Marquise of O- by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

221 editions published between 1903 and 2018 in 8 languages and held by 922 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A young Marquise, caught in mortal danger in the midst of a furious battle, falls into a deep swoon. She comes round moments later, however, safe within her castle and apparently unharmed, and is able to resume her life in gratitude and complacency. So when, weeks later, she is alarmed by strange periods of faintness and indisposition, the solution that suggests itself seems entirely irrational. How could the widowed young Marquise be pregnant? And what will her parents say?" "Imbued with subtle comic moments and lashed by the passionate outbursts of anger and love experienced by characters caught in a bizarre and unpredictable chain of events, The Marquise of O- is a truly Kleistian twist on the long tradition of sexual drama. Its companion pieces, The Earthquake in Chile and The Foundling, are darker and more uncompromising in flavour, demonstrating, in their flashes of horror and injustice, the full range of Kleist's art."--BOOK JACKET
Über das Marionettentheater by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

208 editions published between 1920 and 2013 in 8 languages and held by 868 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Erzählungen by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

204 editions published between 1810 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 830 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Kleist variations : three plays by Eric Bentley( Book )

6 editions published between 1982 and 2005 in English and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"These plays by Eric Bentley - Concord, The Fall of the Amazons, and Wannsee - are variations on plays by Heinrich von Kleist. Concord, which depicts discord in Concord, Massachusetts, around the year 1800, is a variation on The Broken Jug. The Fall of the Amazons, in which the Greek hero Achilles is slain by an Amazon queen, is a variation on the play Penthesilea. Kleist rejected the older version of the story in which Achilles killed her. Kleist's version receives another twist from Bentley. Wannsee, the third play in The Kleist Variations (and also the lake on whose shores Kleist committed suicide), is a variation of Cathy of Heilbronn

The duel by Heinrich von Kleist( Book )

58 editions published between 1923 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 400 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"No amount of wisdom could possible make sense of the mysterious verdict which God intended through this duel." One of the few novellas written by the master German playwright, The Duel was considered by Thomas Mann and others to be one of the great works of German literature. The story of a virtuous woman slandered by a nobleman, it is a precise study of a subject that fascinated von Kleist: that people are sometimes seemingly punished for their very innocence
Michael Kohlhaas by Arnaud Des Pallières( Visual )

14 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With the age of feudalism in decline, Europe rests at a tense crossroads between the old world and the new. Kohlhaas resorts to extremes after these crimes destroy his livelihood and trust in the law, igniting a rampage through the countryside in his quest for justice
