This Third Edition reflects the advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment planning made in recent years. The first part of the book offers a complete update on the science of cancer prognosis while the second part contains site-specific chapters that provide evidence-based guidelines for treatment. Each clinical chapter summarizes the significance of the great variety of tumour-related, patient-related, and environment-related factors that play a role in the prognosis of cancer, all backed with a grid for quick reference
Clinical oncology; a manual for students and doctors by International Union against Cancer( Book )

19 editions published between 1973 and 1978 in 3 languages and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The outstanding success of the First Edition and the expansion of our knowledge about cancer over the 5 years since its publication have led to the decision to publish a Second Edition which has been fully revised, rewritten and enlarged by the addition of several sections. The First Edition was translated into Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Serbo-Croat and it is expected that additional translations (French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.) will make this Second Edition a truly international basic cancer Manual. The Revision Committee is convinced that all students and general physicians should know: (a) the important basic aspects of cancer; (b) some details of the most common cancers; and (c) a few important points about the less common cancers. An attempt has been made to strengthen Part I, General Aspects, which is considered to be the most important part of the Manual for the world's physicians. However, the most common cancers in one part of the world are not necessarily the same in other parts and it is planned to work with local groups to produce adaptations and translations as seem appropriate. In particular, the UICC is anxious to work with local, national, and international committees to help improve the educational experience of students and general physicians in the geographic areas in question. Regional Conferences held by the UICC in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East have resulted in initial plans to accomplish this aim

TNM-atlas : illustrated guide to the classification of malignant tumours( Book )

9 editions published between 1982 and 1985 in English and held by 182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Confronted with myriads ofTs, N's and M's in the VICC TNM booklet, classifying a malignancy may seem to many cancer clini cians a tedious, dull and pedantic task. But then when he looks into the TNM-Atlas all of a sudden lifeless categories become vi vid images, challenging his know-how and his investigational skills. Prof. Dr. Brigit van der Werf-Messing, Chairman of the International TNM-Committee of the VICC. Preface In 1938 the League of Nations Health Organization published an "Atlas illustrating the division of cancer of the uterine cervix into four stages according to the anatomo-clinical extent of the growth". Since this work appeared, the idea of visual representation of the anatomical extent of malignant tumours at the different stages of their development has been repeatedly discussed. At its meeting in Copenhagen in July 1954, the VICC adopted as part of its programme "the realization of a clinical atlas". However, the time to do the planned illustration work was not ripe until the National Committees and international organiza tions had officially recognized the 28 classifications of malignant tumours at various sites as presented in the 3rd edition of the "TNM Booklet" (1978) edited by M. Harmer. This was all the more important since in 1980, in addition to the "Booklet", a "Brochure of Checklists" edited by A.H. Sellers was made available as a further aid in the practical application of the TNMsystem

Ovarian cancer by Fernando Gentil( Book )

3 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The incidence of ovarian cancer has progressively increased during the past decade, and its mortality rate has followed a similar course. Conversely, in cancer of the uterine cervix, the mortality rate has diminished. Detection and early diag nosis have been the two responsible factors in achieving the decrease in the number of deaths occurring in cancer of the cervix. The revers~ is true in cancer of the ovary: diagnosis as a rule is only established late, when dissemination has already occurred, thus making the control of the disease much more difficult. Clinical staging thus far has not been in use at many centers, and it therefore becomes very difficult to compare results of treatment since we do not know the exact anatomical extent of the disease. Histopathological classification in cancer of the ovary is still a very controversial subject and a uniform terminology is urgently required. Management of patients with cancer of the ovary varies widely from one institu tion to another. There is no agreement as to how to treat an ovarian neoplasm; by surgery alone, or, by using radiation and chemotherapy as a complement to the operative treatment. In an effort to shed more light on these items, the Patient Care Committee of the UIce held this symposium, which was unique in the broadness of its scope pertaining to every phase of ovarian cancer

New directions in cancer treatment by Ian Magrath( Book )

4 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together in one volume a large amount of information on the progress that is being made in developing novel and improved methods of cancer treatment. The first part of the book reviews areas such as: - physical treatment, including radiation therapy and hyperthermia; - chemotherapy, with particular interest in new drugs and methods of overcoming drug resistance; - biological approaches, including biological response modifiers, monoclonal antibodies and hormonal therapies; - and future approaches, such as the prevention of metastases, the induction of differentiation or even the utilization of the specific molecular lesions in cancer as a target for therapy. The second part deals with recent progress and future directions in particular types of cancer. The book is well referenced so as to serve as a base for more detailed exploration of any given topic. The dissemination of such new information aims to foster additional collaborative studies and possibly the development of new research protocols
