Kenchreai, eastern port of Corinth : results of investigations by the University of Chicago and Indiana University for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens by Wilma Stern( )

11 editions published between 1976 and 2007 in English and held by 1,326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hundreds of richly decorated ivory and bone fragments from furniture and parts from at least three crossed-leg chairs, survived under seawater in an apsidal room at Kenchreai, the Eastern port of ancient Corinth. These excavated remains include fragments of an incised bone panel with a scene of an emperor and attendants, a thiasos, bucolic and hunt scenes, seated philosophers, erotes, and a miniature ivory Corinthian order supporting a bone arcade decorated with erotes. Decorative moldings and large bone rings suggest that most of these belonged to a luxuriously decorated chest. Dating to the fourth century, these objects provide an important addition to our knowledge of the artistic production of late Roman Egypt and the working of ivory, bone, and wood

Local politics and development in the Middle East by Louis J Cantori( Book )

3 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although development at the local level is a primary goal of most assistance schemes, most development agencies and banks know little of politics at the local level in developing countries. As a result, assistance programs generally lack relevance to indigenous populations and are--at the community level--viewed as being controlled from the "outside." The authors of this book concentrate on how local politics influence development in the Middle East, with the intent of encouraging more appropriate--and thus more effective--assistance programs. They discuss general policy issues and the nature of center-periphery relations in Middle East countries and delve into specific problems encountered in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Tunisia, and North Yemen, showing how information about local political schemes can aid administrators of development programs in providing assistance that is acceptable--and accepted--at the local level. The case studies provide a broad base for planning, encompassing capitalist, state capitalist, and socialist systems in both rural and urban settings

Theories of continuity and infinitesimals : four philosophers of the nineteenth century by Lisa Keele( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The subject of this dissertation is mathematical continuity in particular. By mathematical continuity, I mean continuity as it applies to or is found in mathematical systems such as sets of numbers. Mathematical continuity is a relatively recent concern. The need to address whether numerical systems are continuous came about with the creation of calculus, specifically, of limit theory
Nana Oparebea and the Akonnedi Shrine : cultural, religious and global agents by Okomfo Ama Boakyewa( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation investigates religious and ethnic pluralism enacted through the heterogeneous synthesis of Guan-Akan ritual practice exemplified in the town of Larteh, Ghana, the Akonnedi Shrine pantheon and its priest fellowship headed by high priestess Nana Akua Oparebea (b.1900-d.1995). These interrelated plural iterations present indigenous Guan historical and socio-linguistic survivals, while simultaneously indicating assimilated Akan layers of politics and performance; priesthood connects these levels of pluralism
Measuring internal and external conceptualizations of sexual consent : a mixed-methods exploration of sexual consent by Kristen N Jozkowski( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sexual assault is a substantial problem among women in the United States, especially among college women. Colleges and universities have implemented sexual assault prevention initiatives to combat the high rates of assault. Sexual assault prevention efforts geared toward college students have focused on educating students to obtain consent as a mechanism to reduce rates of assault, yet little is known about how college students conceptualize or communicate consent and there are currently no measures available to assess students' consent to sex. The current study aimed to better understand college students' conceptualizations of sexual consent as well as to utilize a systematic approach in the development of validated measures to assess sexual consent during a sexual encounter. This study integrated mixed methods to better understand consent and develop measures of consent via two waves of data collection. First, qualitative data was collected to better understand how students define consent and indicate their consent and non-consent during a sexual encounter. The qualitative data was also used as a foundation for measure development. Next, the qualitative data was coded and used to provide a framework for item writing in order to drive the design of quantitative measures aimed at assessing sexual consent. A quantitative survey was then administered to college students which included the newly written items developed from the qualitative data. The newly written items were subsequently assessed for their psychometric properties. Results from the qualitative data indicated gender differences in how college students communicate consent and non-consent with women relying more on verbal cues and men relying more on non-verbal cues. Such findings may have important implications for designing more effective sexual assault prevention education programming. Findings from the quantitative survey resulted in two measures of consent (one assessing internal feelings towards consent; the second assessing external behavioral or verbal indicators of consent), with high internal consistency reliability, and five factors each. Such findings provide important contributions to the field of sexuality as these measures can be used in future research to better understand sexual consent and the contextual factors that may impact consent
Change without confrontation : the making of mainstream meditation by Jaime Kucinskas( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation contributes to scholarship on consensus-based movement mobilization, institutional change, and field theory by exploring how movements with stigmatized cultural elements develop consensus-based tactics to establish legitimacy and build new fields. Using mixed qualitative methods and an abductive, multi-level approach, I examine how Buddhist-inspired meditators legitimized and diffused meditation to create a new contemplative meditation field anchored in multiple secular fields (science, education, business, healthcare, and the military), largely without confrontation. In Chapter 1, I investigate how this movement assesses the broader multi-institutional environment it is embedded in, as well as movement leaders' strategies to break into new fields. I examine in Chapter 2 how movement leaders adapt and transform Buddhist culture to move it into new secular institutions. I find Buddhist meditation undergoes a secularization process, at the same time as elements of the sacred are infused into secular institutions. Investigating how meditation moves reveals the importance of strategic action in contemporary lived religion, as well as shows how many kinds of institution-specific forms of contemplative culture are produced through interactions with targeted audiences. These diverse forms of contemplative culture enable the movement to recruit and include many different institutional audiences. Lastly, in Chapter 3, I show how the movement "intervention" programs, which resocialize organizational inhabitants to align their lives with contemplative perspectives, help the movement transform their targeted institutions from the inside out
Decreasing blame and building therapeutic alliance : clarifying central change processes in Functional Family Therapy by Heather M Pederson( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study addresses the limited research on the relationship between crucial therapeutic change processes---blame reduction and alliance building---and their relationship to retention in family therapy. This study compares families that dropped out early, or retained in an evidence-based family therapy treatment, using archival data of family member therapeutic alliance ratings and observational ratings of parental blame collected by the researcher and a team of trained raters. The sample included 53 juvenile offenders and their families that participated in court-ordered Functional Family Therapy (FFT) treatment in a diverse urban setting. Findings were that all families on average experienced a reduction in parental blame within the first two sessions of FFT, and that there was evidence of unique relationships between parental blame and family member alliances to their therapist. High parental blame was related to higher parent-therapist alliance; whereas, high parental blame was associated with low adolescent-therapist alliance. The results of this study have important implications for clarifying "how" family therapy works, as well as further highlighting the value of the principles and therapeutic goals of FFT
Exploring the effect of autonomous student experiences on positive youth development by Yun Chang( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study used a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative research design to explain and interpret the effect of ASE on youth autonomy and PYD. A questionnaire was developed to collect quantitative data measured by three scales, including Noom's (1999) Adolescent Autonomy Questionnaire, Lerner et al.'s (2005) Positive Youth Development Short Form Measurement, and Characteristics of the ASE scale adapted from Sibthorp's Characteristics of the Experience Scale (2000). This questionnaire was administered three times throughout the course, including the first day of course, the day before the ASE, and after participants finished the ASE. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. These one-on-one phone interviews were conducted with selected participants about two weeks after they returned home from their field experiences
