City kids Patsy and Brian are siblings happy to be visiting their friend Jim at the farm. It is their first vacation without their parents and it becomes even more exciting when they learn that Jim has a secret. He found a gypsy boy named Ben hiding in the woods. Ben is hiding because he found a little horse and he fears adults will think he stole the animal. Ben's plan is to run away but the others believe that would only make things worse. Patsy and Brian help Jim smuggle food out to Ben, find him a new hiding place, and figure out a way he can keep the horse he loves. Notable is the independence and honesty shown by the children as they work out Ben's problem. Patsy and Brian have la wonderful vacation playing on the river, exploring a spooky old mill, learning to care for farm animals, and even getting their first horseback riding lessons from Jim's father
