The ecology of fishes in British Columbia kelp beds : I. Barkley Sound Nereocystis beds by B. M Leaman( Book )

4 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interest in the potential of floating kelp beds in the coastal waters of B.C. for the extraction of phycocolloids and other plant products, or for the production of kelp meal as a dietary supplement for humans and livestock has stimulated investigation of factors infuencing the wise harvest of the plants. Fish species frequenting kelp beds are divided into resident, associated and transient. This project was conducted to examine the fish community of a bull kelp stand in Barkley Sound; to determine the relationships of the species in this community to each other and to the habitat; to examine the effect of experimental canopy removal on the diversity and abundance of the species in this community; and to relate these findings to the management of the kelp resource. The report describes the kelp bed studied, the ecology of the fish community in it, and the results and implications of canopy removal

Cloning methods resulting in a genetically uniform product are being developed, as well as a structure suitable for kombu farms. Physiological studies closely related to edible kelp research were initiated and are reported also

In 1981, a search was undertaken for a suitable material tosubstitute for the traditional shell cultch used in both near andoff bottom culture of Pacific oysters. Various materials weretested and a polyvinylchloride 2 m tube with an outside diameterof 20 mm was chosen. Subsequent work in 1982 and 1983concentrated on handling and harvesting methods, in addition toachieving spat settlement on the tubes in setting tanks usinghatchery-produced eyed larvae. Results were promising and use ofthe tubes has been found to improve the economics of longlineoyster culture in British Columbia
